School record falls as Stags claim individual and team wins at Embry-Riddle Invite
PRESCOTT, Ariz. – For the second time in three years, the No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team came away from the Embry-Riddle Invitational as tournament champions. This year, the Stags not only came away with a first place team finish, they won the tournament by 24 strokes and also had the top three individual finishers at the three-round tournament played on the par-72 Talking Rock Golf Course on Sept. 29-30.
The 24-stroke margin of victory over host and second place team finisher Embry-Riddle is the largest margin of victory for a CMS men's golf team in a 54-hole tournament dating back to 1958 according to head coach Bim Jollymour. The Stags shot a combined three-round score of 859 which was 5-under par, including a tournament-best final round score of 282. All three rounds for CMS were the daily low rounds as the Stags led for the duration of the tournament.
Redlands finished in third place while Cal Lutheran finished in fourth and Arizona Christian rounded out the top-5.
All told, three of the five Stag golfers finished under par for the tournament and four Stag golfers had at least one round under par. Sophomore Justin Beck (7-under) won the tournament with a score of 209 while senior Brad Shigezawa (5-under) finished in second and sophomore Kethan Reddy (1-under) finished in third. Reddy won last week's tournament for the Stags. Both Beck and Shigezawa completed all three rounds under par. Beck had a tournament-low score of 68 in the final round.
Rounding out the field for CMS were a pair of freshman in Max Urman (plus-9) and Jack Adolfson (plus-14) who finished in a tie for 11th and 17th, respectively.
CMS played two fall tournaments winning team and individual titles in both. The spring season for the Stags begins on Feb. 10.
