CMS Men's Basketball Rolls Past Caltech for Seventh Straight Win

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Graduate student Caelan Jones set a new career high with 25 points as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team built a huge lead early and coasted to an 84-52 win over Caltech on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Pavilion.

The win was the seventh in a row for the Stags, who improve to 9-2 overall on the year, as well as 3-1 in SCIAC play. Caltech falls to 1-11 overall and 0-3 in the conference with the loss.

Will Householter added 17 points for CMS, while Rhett Carter had 10 and Matt Meredith also had 10, reaching double figures for the first time this season after recently returning from an injury.

Jones shot 10-19 from the floor and 4-10 from three to reach 25 points, eclipsing his previous best of 23 points set two games ago against Cal Lutheran. Householter had a well-balanced stat line of 17 points, four rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Stags.

CMS used a 10-0 run early to push an 8-4 lead up to 18-4, as Jones capped it off with a three-pointer and a fast break dunk off a feed from Householter. After Caltech hit a three-pointer, CMS rattled off the next 15 points to build a 33-7 lead on a Carter lay-up off another Householter assist. A three-point play from Meredith gave the Stags their largest lead of the half at 40-10, and CMS eventually went into the break up by 27 points (47-20) and were never threatened in the second half.

The Stags had put five players in double figures in each of their last three games, and had only four against the Beavers, but starters Josh Angle (six points, six rebounds and four assists) and James Frye (seven points, six rebounds and four assists) each had well-balanced stat lines while taking just seven field goal attempts apiece.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Occidental for a 7 p.m. contest.
