CMS Basketball Heads Into Holiday Break with 82-58 win over Buena Vista



CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team looked sharp coming off of a one-week break for final exams, capturing an 82-58 win over Buena Vista on Sunday afternoon at Roberts Pavilion.

Josh Angle scored 24, Rhett Carter had 20, and Will Householter chipped in with 17 off the bench for the Stags, who improve to 5-4 on the season with the win, while Buena Vista slips to 7-4 with the defeat. 

CMS shot 57.6 percent from the floor on the day, after making 10 of its first 13 shots to build an early lead that swelled to 20 by halftime. The Stags also had 18 assists as a team to only 10 turnovers. 

The Stags did trail briefly at 5-3, but then scored the next 11 points to seize control of the game. Carter tied it, Caelan Jones put CMS ahead to stay with a lay-up, Angle followed with a steal, a lay-up, and a three-pointer, and Reid Jones capped off the run with a jumper to make the score 14-5. 

Caelan Jones had five straight points to stretch the lead up to 26-12 with 11:19 left in the half. The Beavers got it to single digits again at 31-22 with 5:13 left in the half, but Reid Jones answered with a three-pointer. After Beuna Vista made a basket to cut it to 10, CMS closed the half on a 10-0 run to take a 44-24 lead into the break. Householter had back-to-back baskets in the stretch and Angle capped it off with a jumper. 

CMS built a lead up to as many as 33 points in the second half, before settling for a 24-point final margin. Reid Jones finished with 10 points, and Caelan Jones had nine as the Stags nearly put five players in double figures. 

The Stags will be back in action after the holiday break when they take on Emmanuel on Dec. 28 at Roberts Pavilion.
