Scarlett Tabbed as POY, Morris and Lynds Named All-SCIAC
LAGUNA NIGEL, Calif. – The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) released their All-Conference men's basketball teams on Friday morning. The two teams, made up of 13 student-athletes, included a trio of Stags seniors. Michael Scarlett (CMC) headlined the awards season for the Stags, earning his second-straight David Wells Play of the Year honor. Scarlett was also recognition on the First Team alongside teammate Kendrick Morris (CMC). Fellow senior Scott Lynds (CMC) earned his first All-SCIAC honor with a Second Team nod. In addition to the trio named All-SCIAC, head coach Ken Scalmanini and his staff repeated as SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year.
As mentioned, Scarlett earned Player of the Year accolades for the second-straight season after leading the Stags to a 15-1 conference record. The senior led the conference by scoring 18.9 points per game overall and a 20.1 clip in conference play. He posted double-digit point totals in all 15 conference contests he appeared. He was nearly perfect from the line, leading the SCIAC with a 93.0% mark from the stripe. Scarlett grabbed 3.9 boards per contest and tallied 18 steals and 40 assists on the season. The Irvine, Calif. native dropped a season-high 32 points on Feb. 7 against Pomona-Pitzer including 13 field goals and five buckets from beyond the arc. Beyond his statistics, Scarlett's poise and confidence on the floor makes his teammates better. With defenses regularly helping on defense to try and temper his impact on a game, the floor opens for his teammates. This season when Scarlett plays in a game, CMS is 16-2. In games without the beard, the Stags are just 1-5.
Morris earned his second-career All-Conference nod after being named Second Team in 2016-17. During the regular season, he led the SCIAC in field goal percentage at 61.5% and ranks 32nd nationally in the statistic. Morris is third on the team averaging 14.0 points per game and sits second in the SCIAC with 8.0 rebounds per game. All those numbers added up to seven doubles-doubles for the senior this season. Against La Verne on Jan. 31 turned in his best performance of the season. He grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds and tied his season-high with 22 points. Morris also blocked 20 shots this season.
Lynds earned his first-career All-Conference accolade this season after being named to the Second Team. The senior from Laguna Nigel was the second leading scorer for the Stags, posting 14.6 points per game. Primarily playing the point, he led CMS with 40 steals and was second on the squad with 60 assists. Not afraid to fire from downtown, Lynds made a team-high 47 triples and dropped a season-high 24 points twice. Lynds went for 24 against Cal Miramar on Dec. 2 thanks to a 5-7 mark from beyond the arc. Almost exactly a month later, Lynds replicated the total with 24 against La Verne on Jan. 3.
Scalmanini, now in his 20th season at the helm of the Stags, coached CMS to a 17-7 overall record and a 15-1 mark in SCIAC play, highlighted by the 14-game winning streak since Jan. 3. Since taking over in 1998, Scalmanini has coached CMS to 10 regular season titles and five SCIAC tournament crowns. This is the third time in the last four seasons the CMS staff has earned the Coaching Staff of the Year honor.

The Stags take to the court tonight in the SCIAC Semifinals against the Chapman Panthers at 7 p.m. in Roberts Pavilion. CMS enters the SCIAC Tournament as the top seed after finishing the regular season with a 15-1 record in the conference.
