Scarlett's perfect night from three sinks Pioneers

PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior Michael Scarlett (CMC) was lights out from beyond the arc on Saturday night, going a career-high six for six on 3-pointers and scoring 24 points to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team to a 70-45 victory over Lewis & Clark. Junior Kendrick Morris (CMC) turned in another efficient performance, making six out of seven shot attempts for 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Markel Leonard led the Pioneers with 11 points while his teammate Jonathan Boddie scored five points with five rebounds, a block, and two steals. The Stags controlled the game on both sides of the floor, converting 63.6% of their field goal attempts and holding the Pioneers to a 25% shooting night. CMS also recorded seven blocks, including two each from senior Riley Hall (CMC) and freshman Jeremy Horn (CMC).

CMS wasted little time to put the game away from the Pioneers as early as possible. Trailing only 7-6 five minutes into the half, sophomore Ryan Kusch (HMC) sparked a major run after stealing from Nico Bricker and converting a fast layup. Morris got to work in the paint and scored three consecutive layups, including a foul shot, and sophomore Evan Davis (CMC) sank a 3-pointer to give CMS the 18-7 lead. With 10 minutes left in the half, Scarlett began to put on a show and scored four 3-pointers to help CMS to a 42-25 lead at the half.

The long break at halftime didn't slow down Scarlett as he continued where he left off in the second half with a jumper and a 3-pointer to extend the Stags' lead 47-25. However, the Pioneers managed to stifle the Stags for an extended period as they held CMS scoreless for over three minutes while going on a 9-0 run to cut the lead 51-36. Hall managed to break the slump with a layup assisted by Scarlett and the Stags continued to reel after senior Scott Lynds (CMC) made back-to-back shots. Scarlett scored his sixth trey with 7:52 left in the game to put CMS ahead 60-38 and the Pioneers didn't put on another run to get back in the contest.

The Stags conclude their road trip in the Pacific Northwest with a perfect 2-0 record and will return home on Friday, Nov. 25 for their Roberts Pavilion debut. CMS will host Cal Maritime for the Wells Classic at 6 pm and will head across the street to Rains Center in Pomona-Pitzer the following day to face Southwestern (Tex.) at 3:30 pm.
