Stags dominate the glass to win season opener

Newberg, Ore. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team made a statement in their first game of the season with their rebounding to beat George Fox University 73-60. The Stags out-rebounded the Bruins by a whopping 51 to 20 margin and snagged as many offensive rebounds as the Bruins had defensive boards (18).

Senior Riley Hall (CMC) led the team with 10 rebounds and scored six points while junior big man Kendrick Morris (CMC) grabbed eight rebounds and scored 13 points. Senior Scott Lynds (CMC) and junior Michael Scarlett (CMC) co-led the team with 14 points and they each grabbed seven boards. Lynds and Scarlett were perfect from the charity stripe, going 10 for 10 combined. The Bruins saw Dylan Hamlett and JJ Lacey score 15 points each, with Lacey going 3 for 6 from three-point land in the game.

The Stags struggled to find their rhythm from beyond the arc during the first half, but managed to grasp control over the game with their rebounding and second-chance points. CMS out-worked George Fox for rebounds by an absurd 24 to 8 margin and Scarlett went 5 for 8 on the field for 12 points to help the Stags hold a 35-32 lead at the half.

In the second half, CMS tried to put the Bruins away, but George Fox managed to draw a couple fouls and stayed in the game through free throws. Holding onto a 54-49 lead with 8:53 left in the game, the Stags saw their lead slip within a field goal after Lacey hit the trey off a pass from Brandon Jones. Following a timeout by CMS, the Stags came out and attacked on the inside to pull the game away. The Bruins couldn't help but foul Morris in the paint and struggled to contain freshman Miles President (CMC) who scored two layups during an 11-4 run. With less than a minute left in the game, Hall scored a layup to give CMS the 69-58 lead. Lynds was fouled intentionally on the following possession and iced the game from the free throw line.

CMS will continue their road trip on Saturday, Nov. 19 against Lewis and Clark in hopes of maintaining its strong start to the season. The game will start at 7 pm.
