Stags cruise past Beavers

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In their most lopsided SCIAC victory of the year, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team rolled over the Caltech Beavers 61-45.

Senior center Shelby Lane (CMC) gave the Stags a 5-3 lead on a layup less than three minutes in and the Stags would go on to lead the rest of the way.

Jason Harrington (CMC) increased the CMS lead to 11 points late in the first, wrapping up a solid offensive half for the senior forward. Lane matched Harrington's seven point total in the first half and also posted six rebounds.

Caltech made it a five point game early in the second half but CMS outscored the Beavers 18-2 over the next six minutes and blew the game wide open.

The teams went back and forth the rest of the way but the lead held up for the Stags who earned a decisive 61-45 win.

Lane led all shooters with 14 points and nine rebounds but the overall offensive attack was balanced for CMS. Seven players put up five or more points and the Stags shot at a collective 45% rate throughout the night.

Nasser Al-Rayes was the only Beaver to score double-digit points and connected on two of five three pointers.

The Stags earned their third conference victory this season and improved their overall mark to 8-9. Despite a subpar start to the season the win puts CMS one game out of a tie for the fourth and final SCIAC Postseason Tournament spot.

Their next matchup will be at home against Whittier on Feb. 3.
