Double-double for Lane in comeback vs. San Diego Christian

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Student-Athlete of the Week, senior Shelby Lane (CMC) recorded his fifth double-double on the season in the comeback victory over San Diego Christian, 77-76, in the Stags' home opener. CMS came back from a 13 point deficit near the beginning of the first half to notch their sixth win of the season.

In the first half, CMS was much more effective from the field than from the foul line. Three Stags tallied eight points: sophomores Nicolas Segura (CMC), Joey Malgesini (CMC), and Michael Scarlett (CMC). Segura was perfect in the half, making all four shots he put up.

CMS jumped out to an early 13-4 lead that would be the largest on the night for the Stags. CMS scored three baskets in a row to go up 21-12 at the halfway mark of the first period. Then, the Hawks went on a nine point run led by top-scorer Dalante Dunklin to tie up the game at 21 points. Dunklin capped off his 15-point half with a three-pointer to end the period. The Stags trailed by eight points: 39-31.

To start off the second half, San Diego Christian made their first two baskets and then, due to a Stag foul, an and-one to give the Hawks their largest lead 44-31. CMS punched back with buckets by senior Jack Earley (CMC), Segura and Scarlett. In the second half alone, Scarlett was 3-for-4 from behind the arc.

CMS got within four points on another Scarlett three at 46-42 but then the Hawks stretched their lead out to 12 on an uncontested layup by Mark Eden.

From that point on, CMS out-scored San Diego Christian 33-20 as Scarlett contributed nine and Lane, eight.

In the final minute, Lane made a layup to give CMS with 75-74 lead which was quickly lost as Trevor English found the net to go up 76-75. After a timeout by SDC, Segura made a fading jumper to regain the lead. This time, CMS called the timeout to draw up a final defensive play with 11 seconds on the clock and a one point lead.

As time expired, the Hawks put the ball in their leading scorer, Dunklin's hands and, in a last-ditch effort, Dunklin lobbed up a shot only to have it swatted away by Lane to dramatically end the game. Lane ended up with four blocks on the night.

The CMS scoring was led by Scarlett at 23 and Segura at 17 points. Lane topped the team with 12 boards.

The Stags improve to 6-2 with the win and next travel to Concordia on Dec. 29 to face another NAIA foe.
