Stags break Caltech’s win streak; tied for second in SCIAC

CLAREMONT, Calif. –  In their second meeting of the season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team beat Caltech 60-44 on Thursday night. The Stags controlled the game from the tip and had as much as a 29 point lead in the second half. With the win, CMS snapped Caltech's two game winning streak.

The first 11 points of the game went to CMS. The Beavers finally got on the board with a three-pointer by Bryan Joel. At halftime, CMS held a 16-point advantage, which ultimately was the difference in the game as each team scored 26 points during the second half.

On the night, the SCIAC's leading scorer, Tyler Gaffaney did not disappoint. Gaffaney was good for 18 points and seven rebounds in 32 minutes of play.

Shelby Lane topped the team in rebounds with eight in the game including a trio of offensive boards. Lane wowed the crowd with three dunks and a nicely executed tip-in. Of the Stags' 20 points in the paint, Lane was responsible for eight.

Nick Lund and Jack Ely both came off the bench and contributed five points each; Lund with four boards also. Kendrick Morris saw time and came up with two big time blocks in the second half.

CMS shot 49% in the game and held Caltech below 30% at 29.5%.

Kc Emezie was the Beaver's leading scorer with eight points on the night and Nick Buoniconti led with eight rebounds.

CMS (9-3) have four games remaining in the season. The Stags face Occidental (5-7) on Saturday, Feb. 14 and then return home Tuesday, Feb. 17 for a rematch with Pomona-Pitzer (6-6) at 7:30 p.m. in the Rains Center.
