Stags take care of business against Oxy

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team took care of business against Occidental on Tuesday night, winning 82-51. The game saw both teams coming off tough losses over the weekend; Oxy lost to Whittier in overtime and CMS to Pomona-Pitzer in the last seconds. The Stags stepped up and took control in the first half and did not slow down to ultimately win by over 30 points.

The Stags shot 50% from the field on the night. Tyler Gaffaney (CGU) was personally 6-for-12 including a pair of three-pointers and Richard Harris (CMC) came off the bench and went 3-for-3 with a handful of textbook moves under the hoop.

CMS' scoring came from all over the court. Four of the five starters scored in double-digits. Jason Harrington (CMC) was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line and started a 9-0 run that took the Stags from being ahead 23-15 to 32-15 late in the first half. Jack Grodahl (CMC) was very selective with his shots and only missed one three on the night. The big man, Shelby Lane (CMC) put up 10 points in the paint and led the team with eight rebounds. Lane is currently in the top five in SCIAC for total rebounds on the season with 113.

Freshman Jack Ely (CMC) came off the bench and went to work for 18 minutes. Ely has developed into having a larger role as the season has gone on, averaging the most minutes per game of the rookie class. Michael Scarlett (CMC) tops the freshmen for points per game at 4.1 and three-point percentage at 32.4%.

Occidental's Jay Miller was a blur on the court, scoring 13 points while Andrew Garrison had a game high of nine rebounds.

The Stags scored over 40 points in each half, raising their points per game average from 69.4 to 70.2. Known for its defense, CMS produced once again, holding Oxy to 51 points, below the team's average of 53.9.

The win keeps the Stags in second place with a 6-2 record in SCIAC and Oxy remains in the middle of the pack at 4-4. CMS next travels to Whittier. Last time against the Poets, the Stags won 90-57 with Grodahl putting up 23 points.
