SCIAC win streak snapped as CMS falls at Pomona-Pitzer 64-57

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A cold shooting night from the field led to the first conference loss of the season for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team, a 64-57 defeat at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium. The loss dropped CMS to 15-5 overall and 10-1 in SCIAC, one game ahead of Pomona-Pitzer in the loss column for the conference lead.

CMS stayed close throughout the game despite shooting 38 percent from the field for the game and 31 percent in the first half. Senior guard Remy Pinson kept CMS in the game early with the first 12 points of the game for the Stags. A layup by sophomore center Nick Lund with 9:51 in the first half was the first basket for CMS by a player other than Pinson. Pomona-Pitzer's largest lead of the first half was six points on a handful of occasions.

With eight seconds left in the first half, CMS senior guard Tyler Gaffaney tied the game at 27, but Kyle McAndrews hit a three-pointer as time expired in the half to give Pomona-Pitzer the three point lead.

In the second half, CMS led 45-43 with 10:08 left in the game on a put-back by freshman forward Riley Hall, the last time they would lead. Pomona-Pitzer then ran off 10-straight points over a six minute stretch led by McAndrews who had eight during the decisive run.

Pinson had a game-high 28 points for CMS while Gaffaney added 14 with six rebounds and six assists and Lund had seven points off the bench.

McAndrews led Pomona-Pitzer with 18 points.

Next up for CMS is a road game at Caltech on Feb. 12.
