Stags trump Panthers in first 2014 SCIAC game

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team remained undefeated in conference after Saturday's 66-54 win over Chapman. After trailing for most of the first half, the Stags took the lead and never gave it up for the remainder of the game.

Despite a slow start in the first half, Tyler Gaffaney put up ten points for CMS, leading the offense. Gaffaney only sat out the final 30 seconds of the initial half.

The Stags were able to stave off the Panthers due to excellent rebounding by Jason Harrington with five in the first half.

In the second half, the starters for CMS led and controlled the game. Jack Grodahl and Nick Lund had three rebounds each and Lund blocked a Chapman shot to further limit their scoring. Remy Pinson hit both of the shots he took, contributing five points in the half.

The Stags were ahead by as many as 20 points midway through the second half. Chapman held CMS to only six points for the rest of the game but were unable to overcome the 20 point deficit and the Stags held onto the lead for another SCIAC victory.

CMS shot 66% (29-44) from the field and recorded 26 defensive rebounds on the night. Gaffaney totaled 18 points with Grodahl and Pinson right behind him with 13 and 12 respectively.

Colin Zavrsnick was Chapman's leading scorer with 12 points and John Joyce had a team high of five rebounds.

With this win, CMS is 7-4 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC play. The Stags' meet their next opponent, La Verne, on this Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 pm.
