CLAREMONT, Calif. – In its conference opener, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team held off rival Pomona-Pitzer 65-59 on Wednesday night in the final regular season matchup between the two programs at CMS' Ducey Gymnasium.
The Stags will play the duration of the 2013-14 season at Ducey Gym before it is demolished and construction of Roberts Pavilion begins in March of 2014. With the win, CMS improved to 5-3, 1-0 in SCIAC while Pomona-Pitzer dropped to 5-3, 2-1 in SCIAC. CMS closes out the Ducey Gym era with a 41-18 record over Pomona-Pitzer on its home floor.
After holding a double-digit lead at times early in the first half and being up by as many as 13 points, CMS had to overcome several rallies by Pomona-Pitzer to earn the win. CMS led 28-15 with 8:31 left in the first half after a basket by sophomore C Shelby Lane. Over the final 8:30 of the first half, Pomona-Pitzer went on a 12-2 run and trailed by just three points at 30-27 at halftime.
Back-to-back baskets by Pomona-Pitzer's Jake Klewer and Kyle
McAndrews gave Pomona-Pitzer a 31-30 lead with 18:36 remaining in
the game. The teams traded the lead several times over the next six
minutes. A three-pointer by senior G Tyler
Gaffaney at the 12:01 mark of the second half gave CMS
the lead at 46-43, a lead they would hold for the remainder of the
night. Gaffaney led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting
while senior G Remy
Pinson had 18 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the
three-point line and sophomore F Jason
Harrington added 13 points, four rebounds and three
assists.
A three-pointer by Pomona-Pitzer's Joe Eyen narrowed the score to
51-50 with 8:15 remaining but CMS answered with a 7-0 run to secure
the win.
Next up for CMS are a pair of non-conference home games vs.
Concordia (Dec. 14) and Calvin (Dec. 30) before returning to
conference play at home against Chapman (Jan. 4).
