Mivshek’s Big Second Half Leads CMS Over La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 76-68 SCIAC win over La Verne on Saturday night at Ducey Gymnasium. With the win, CMS is now 16-6 overall and 12-2 in SCIAC, while La Verne drops to 8-14, 6-7 in conference.

La Verne jumped out to an early lead over CMS as they led by as many as eight points in the first half after a three-pointer by Vince Bauer at the 14:51 mark. CMS took its first lead of the game at 19-18 on a bucket by sophomore center Chris Rama. The Stags extended their lead to as many as eight points in the first half after sophomore guard Jack Grodahl scored to make it 34-26 with 1:55 in the half. CMS led 34-31 at the break.

The Stags maintained a slim single-digit lead for the first several minutes of the second half. Each time CMS looked as if it was going to pull away, La Verne would claw back in the game. After a free-throw by Paul Titchener, La Verne trailed by three points at 45-42 with 12:16 remaining which as close as they would get.

A 15-7 run capped off by a basket by senior guard Cody Mivshek and a three-pointer from forward Kevin Sullivan gave CMS a double-digit lead at 62-51 with 6:41 left. The Stags stayed ahead by double figures for the rest of the game en route to the win.

Mivshek had a game-high 23 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the three-point line to go along with eight rebounds, while Sullivan added 11 points and junior guard Remy Pinson added 10. Of Mivshek's 23 points, 18 came in the second half.

Jake Veith had a team-high 22 points for La Verne while Alex Wolpe had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Next up on the schedule for CMS is a road game at Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
