Justin Edwards Wins Third SCIAC Athlete of the Week Honor for CMS Football

CLAREMONT, Calif. - For the third time this season, Justin Edwards of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football has earned the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week honor, the league office announced today.

Edwards earned it this time for his role in a big 42-34 win over Chapman, which kept the Stags in the hunt for a share of the league title, heading into the final weekend. Edwards rushed for 211 yards on 38 carries, and scored three touchdowns as CMS defeated Chapman for the second time this season, both by eight points.

Edwards had three touchdowns to break the school record for a single-season with 16, which had held for 35 years since Chris Dabrow set the mark in 1986. Seven of Edwards' touchdowns have come against Chapman, including four in the first meeting (a 29-21 win), and Chapman has only given up seven rushing touchdowns all season in its other seven games.

In addition to a one-yard plunge, Edwards also broke a 30-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to put CMS ahead 14-3, and then capped off the Stags scoring in the fourth with a 39-yard run to make it a 42-27 game. He also ran for a fourth touchdown late that was called back due to a penalty.

CMS will be back in action this weekend when it hosts Pomona-Pitzer in the annual season finale for the Sixth Street Trophy.
