Missed opportunities, Redlands’ passing game hurt CMS in loss

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Powered by three touchdowns in the first half by receiver Taylor Irwin, visiting Redlands defeated the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team 34-6 on Saturday afternoon at Zinda Field in SCIAC play. With the loss, CMS dropped to 2-5 overall, 1-4 in SCIAC while Redlands improved to 5-2 overall and are in sole possession of first place in SCIAC at 5-0.

CMS got its lone touchdown of the afternoon on the last play of the game on a 47-yard touchdown pass from junior QB Sean McKaveney to senior WR Greg Wilson as time expired. Wilson had a team-high 106 yards receiving on six catches while McKaveney passed from 139 yards. CMS had other opportunities to score in the game but came up empty on two trips to the Redlands 5-yard line - one in each half - and one trip to the Redlands 21-yard line in the fourth quarter.

Redlands didn't waste much time scoring as it scored its first touchdown of the game at the 9:39 mark of the first quarter on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Russell to Irwin. In the second quarter, with CMS on the Redlands 5-yard line, Redlands intercepted a CMS pass in the end zone to end the threat and CMS' chance to tie the game. At the 6:39 mark of the second quarter, Redlands extended its lead to 14-0 on a 64-yard pass from Russell to Irwin.

Later in the second quarter, Redlands intercepted its second CMS pass of the quarter. Redlands then took the ball and went 65 yards over 10 plays to go ahead 21-0 just before halftime on the third touchdown of the half by Irwin. The wide receiver finished with 155 yards receiving and 133 of those yards came in the first half.

CMS had 345 yards of total offense while Redlands had 521 yards of total offense including 302 yards through the air.

Turnovers proved costly for CMS with four in the game, two interception and two fumbles.

Sophomore RB Cameron Griffin had a game-high 72 yards rushing for the Stags. On defense, senior DB Joey Liekweg had a game-high 12 tackles while junior LB Max Winsberg also was in double figures with 10. Freshman LB Gator Adams added a sack for CMS.

CMS heads to Chapman on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. for its final road game of the season. Then on Saturday, Nov. 16, CMS returns home to face Pomona-Pitzer at 1 p.m. for Homecoming.
