Stags undone by turnovers in SCIAC opener

CMS lost the turnover battle (4-1) and ultimately the game in their SCIAC opener at La Verne on Saturday.  The Leopards scored 10 points off turnovers and went on to beat the Stags 30-6.  CMS dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in SCIAC while La Verne improved to 2-1 and 1-0.

La Verne's Jhovany Bautista returned an interception 50 yards late in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.  After scoring on their first drive of the second half, the Leos converted a Stag fumble into a field goal for a 17-0 lead.  CMS' touchdown on a CMS record 96-yard fumble return by Nick Nasse late in the fourth quarter cut the lead to 23-6, but was not enough.

Sean McKaveney completed 19 of 39 attempts for 237 yards.  Ryan Farney and Matthew Bradley both caught six passes for 75 and 65 yards respectively.  Cameron Griffin led the Stags on the ground with 41 yards in just five rushes.  CMS tied a team record by committing no penalties in the game.

CMS will have their SCIAC home opener next week against Occidental.  The teams will face off on Zinda Field at 1:00.
