CMS Uses Eight-Run First to Capture 11-4 Win at Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Julian Sanders had a pair of RBI singles in an eight-run first inning as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team got off to a hot start on the road and captured an 11-4 win over Southwestern (Texas) on Friday afternoon.

Sanders finished 3-for-5 with three RBI for CMS, which improves to 4-0 on the season with the win after sweeping three games from Chicago last weekend. Southwestern falls to 3-1 with the loss.

Andrew Mazzone added a three-hit game for CMS (3-for-5), while Jack Potter was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI and Adam Dapkewicz was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Aaron Herst went five innings, striking out eight, and allowing two earned runs to get the win, while Berkeley Harsch threw the final three innings to get the save.

CMS essentially put the game away before making its third out. Tyler Shaw led off with a walk and stole second, and after Mazzone had his first hit of the day, Sanders had an infield single to score Shaw with the game's first run. Potter followed with an RBI double, and after a Bryce Didrickson walk, Kieran Sidebotham had a two-run single to make it 4-0.

After Southwestern turned a double play, Dapkiewicz had an RBI single to third, Shaw followed with a single, and Mazzone singled to load the bases before Sanders had a two-run single to right to cap off the eight-run inning.

From there, Herst was able to earn his win with five innings, and the bullpen allowed just one run in four innings to finish it off, as Matthew Bergan threw one shutout inning, striking out two, before turning it over to Harsch.

The two teams will play the second and third games of their four-game series tomorrow when they play an 11 a.m. doubleheader, before concluding the weekend with a single game on Sunday.
