Shaw Leads CMS Baseball to Series-Opening Win Over Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Tyler Shaw was 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBI from his leadoff position as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team built a big early lead and held on for a 13-8 win over Redlands on Friday afternoon at Arce Field.

With the win, CMS improves to 13-10 overall on the year and 2-5 in the SCIAC, while Redlands slips to 12-10 overall and 3-7 in league play.

Nick Wilson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI for the Stags, while Jarrett Korson went 6.2 innings to get the win.

CMS built a 9-1 lead after two innings, scoring four times with only one hit in the first (as well as three walks and three hit-by-pitches) and then scored five times in the second innings, all starting with two outs and nobody on base. Shaw led off the game with a single and came home on a wild pitch, while Jack Potter and Evan Kelly were both hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and William DeForest drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 4-1 lead.

The Stags had two outs and nobody on in the second, when Julian Sanders grounded a single up the middle, which was followed by a Nick Wilson RBI double. Paul Roche then singled in Wilson, and Kelly singled in Roche to make it 7-1. Shaw capped off the inning with a two-run single to put CMS up 9-1.

Redlands got four of the runs back in the third to close the gap to 9-5, but Shaw hit a solo homer in the fifth and had a sacrifice fly in the sixth after a Potter RBI single to make it 12-5.

Redlands closed to within 12-8 in the eighth and had the tying run at the plate, but Mark Kirkland lined out to Potter in center field to end the threat. Brandon Rho capped off the scoring in the eighth with a sacrifice fly after Shaw nearly homered for a second time, but settled for a double after one-hopping the wall.

Korson improved to 4-1 on the year with the win, allowing nine hits and striking out four while going 6.2 innings. Spencer McCann finished the game off in the ninth with two strikeouts. Roche and Potter each finished 2-for-4 at the plate for the Stags, who had 13 hits as a team.

CMS and Redlands will finish their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Redlands, beginning at 11 a.m.
