Baseball Wins Three out of Four at Californa Invitational

CLAREMONT, CA -- As students of Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd and Scripps College celebrated their Spring Break, the CMS baseball team was competing in the 15th annual California Invitational. The Stags competed against four teams in two days: Wesleyan (Connecticut), Ithaca, Menlo College, and University of La Verne.

In game one on Friday, the Stags faced Wesleyan (Connecticut) in their first double-header. The Stags had hot bats in the 4th inning as they scored nine runs on 11 hits and defeated Wesleyan 15-9. Jason Rehhaut (SO, Stevenson Ranch) went 4-4 with two RBI’s and Anthony Bouvier (JR, San Carlos) went 2-3 with three RBI’s and a 2-run home run. The Stags’ ace pitcher Alex Sunderland (JR, Littleton, CO) pitched 6 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and allowed only three earned runs.

To finish the day, the Stags competed against Ithaca. Ithaca broke out to a 4-1 lead by the end of the first inning, but the Stags chipped at the lead by scoring two in the fourth inning and one in the fifth inning. CMS was able to put the game out of Ithaca’s reach by scoring two runs in the 9th inning and winning 7-4.  Max Rose (SR, Shell Beach) went 3-5 with two RBI’s, a double and a homerun. David Ulrich was the winning pitcher in that game, pitching eight innings with only six hits and two base-on-balls.

In day two of competition, the Stags defeated Menlo College 10-4. CMS and Menlo both scored three runs in the first inning, but the Stags took the first lead of the game by scoring a run in the third inning and grabbing a 4-3 lead. In the fifth inning, Stephanos Stroop (SR, Nashville, TN) hit a two-run triple that gave the Stags two of their three fifth-inning runs. The Stags would also score three runs in the seventh. Stroop finished the game 1-2 with 4 RBI’s. Steve Dannaway (SR, Honolulu, HI) went 2-2 with two RBI’s and three runs scored. Sophomore Jeff Postetter (Kenmore, WA) pitched a complete game and allowed four runs and two base-on-balls with fewer than 125 pitches.

The last game of the tournament was against SCIAC foe La Verne. The Stags went deep into their bullpen and started Freshman Matt Allan (Sammamish, WA). La Verne scored five runs against Allan in the first two innings, but only three were earned. Rose was 2-3 with 5 RBI’s and a three-run homerun in the 8th inning. Travis Nishioka was 2-4 with two runs scored. The Stags had a hard time against the La Verne bullpen, as they only had seven hits in the game.

Max Rose and Jason Rehhaut were named on the All-Tournament team. Rose went 7-19 in the tournament with 8 RBI’s and two home runs. Rehhaut 8-14 with three RBI’s.

The Stags continue SCIAC play on Friday, March 26 when they start a three-game series against Whittier. The Friday game will be at home and will start at 3:00PM.
