Trinity (Texas) 5, Texas-Tyler 0
Making its fourth-straight NCAA postseason appearance, Trinity defeated Texas-Tyler 5-0 to advance to the second round Saturday against host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The second round match is slated for 10 a.m. on May 9 at CMS’ Biszantz Family Tennis Center.


Behind the play of its doubles teams, Trinity moved out to a 3-0 lead. Cheyenne Duncan and Blaire Porter in No. 3 doubles picked up Trinity’s first doubles point for an 8-3 victory over Nicole Musngi and Emily Hoover. Shortly thereafter, Gabrielle Roe and Caroline White won 8-4 in No. 2 doubles for Trinity. The closest doubles match came in the top spot as both teams were evenly matched for much of No. 1 singles. Trinity’s top doubles team of Marie Lutz and Liza Southwick did pull away however for an 8-5 win over Texas-Tyler’s Amy Friesenhahn and Tori Musngi to close out doubles play.

In singles, Trinity sealed the win with a pair of 6-2, 6-1 victories in No. 4 and No. 3 singles. Caroline White had the match-clinching victory for Trinity in No. 3 singles over Jennifer Payne. On three of the four remaining courts before decision, Trinity led. Janae Warren from Texas-Tyler led 6-4, 1-1 in No. 6 singles when the match ended.

Trinity is now in the second round for the second year in a row.  Trinity last made an appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2006, and the team finished fourth overall, falling in the third-place match to Claremont.

Whitman 5, St. Scholastica 0

In the first round match of the NCAA Women’s Tennis National Championships on Friday, Whitman College defeated The College of St. Scholastica 5-0.

In the doubles portion of the match Whitman jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. Whitman’s No. 3 doubles team lead the way for the Missionaries as Erin Bell and Allie Wallin defeated Katie Kingston and Alexia Brascugli of St. Scholastica 8-2.

In the singles the No. 1 singles match finished first as Courtney Lawless of Whitman defeated Alexis Gunderson of St. Scholastica 6-0, 6-1. Getting the fifth and final point of the match for Whitman was Morgan Lawless in No. 3 singles as she defeated Daniela Rojas of St. Scholastica 6-0, 6-0.

Whitman moves on to play Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, May 9 at 10 a.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
