Fall sports teams gearing up for 2014 seasons

CLAREMONT, Calif.—As August comes to a close and summer is ending, the great news for CMS sports fans is that fall sports are right around the corner.  As women’s and men’s soccer, football, volleyball, men’s water polo, and men’s and women’s cross country report and start training there are over 190 athletes hoping to make a CMS athletic team and build on the stellar year that CMS athletics had last year.

Volleyball was the first to have players arrive as they reported Friday, Aug. 16 and held their first official practice the following day on Saturday. Volleyball has eight returners and eight incoming freshman all looking to make a positive impact for Athena volleyball.  Football was the next to report and they came in on Saturday, Aug. 16, and have been practicing since Sunday, Aug. 17.

Men’s and women’s soccer both reported to school on Aug. 17, and had their first official practices on Aug. 18.  Men’s soccer returns 21 players and has 6 freshmen hoping to earn a spot on the roster, whereas women’s soccer has 22 returners and 13 freshman hoping to garner a roster spot this season.

Men’s water polo is the next to have players report for camp when they report on Sunday, Aug. 24, and first official practice the next day. Men’s water polo has a total of 16 returners and are bringing in seven incoming freshmen with all 23 hoping to make an impact for Stag Water Polo this year.

Women’s and men’s cross country also reports Sunday, August 24, and have their first practice of the season on Aug. 25.  Women’s cross country has 21 returners along with 12 freshmen all hoping to contribute in big ways.  Men’s cross country has 25 returners with 11 freshmen looking to build on the success from last year.

All in all, CMS has over 190 athletes reporting for camp and either looking to make a roster or compete for a chance to make a difference for their respective team as CMS fall teams look to build on their successes from 2013.
