LillyBelle Deer (CMC: Senior – Women’s Swimming and Women’s Water Polo)
Deer was the leader of the Athena swim team as a senior. She helped her team to a 31-0 SCIAC dual-meet record and four SCIAC championships during her career. She is a SCIAC champion in the 200-yard freestyle and has participated on multiple conference championship winning relay teams. Deer is an All-American and SCIAC record holder in the 400-yard freestyle relay and a multi-time honorable mention All-American in other relays. She won the swim & dive team’s “Iris Critchell” award for being the most inspirational member of the team. She broke her foot during the spring of her junior year and diligently rehabbed to the point where she was in position to set multiple personal records as a senior. She had the self-discipline to be a four-year member of two varsity sports (swim and water polo). Both sports hold double-day practices throughout the year. She was in-season from late September through early May all four years of her career. Outside of the athletic arena, Deer served as a RA at CMC.

Samantha Kunz (CMC: Senior – Women’s Soccer)
A 3-year starter and 4-year player, Kunz was a key contributor on defense. She was always one of the best players on the field each and every game during her junior and senior seasons because of her consistency and defensive skills. Stats don’t properly show her contribution to the team, although she was one of the main reasons the Athenas were SCIAC champions in 2014. Among her season highlights were scoring the game winner vs. La Verne which was featured on SportsCenter’s Top-10 Plays on Oct. 29, 2014. Other accolades include the following; second team All-SCIAC as a junior and MVP of the defense, second team All-West Region Scholar Athlete, MVP of the defense as a senior, first team All-SCIAC, runner-up for Gosset Prize in Stats, Robert Day School of Economics and Finance and co-captain of the women’s soccer team. She also started an entrepreneurial club on campus, ran the Los Angeles Marathon in March of 2015 to support financial aid fundraising efforts for CMC, served as founder and director for the Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, was a CMC Admissions tour guide and served on the ASCMC Athletic Advisory Committee along with participating in several other activities.

The recipient exhibits:

Athletic Excellence
: The student-athlete has exhibited outstanding performance in his or her sport. The athlete could be, but does not necessarily have to be, the “best” player on a team; rather, the recipient should be the one who has worked the hardest to reach his or her full potential as an athlete.

Academic Excellence: The student-athlete has achieved excellence in his or her full complement of studies.

Leadership: The student-athlete has exhibited outstanding leadership both on the playing field and in campus life. Leadership in athletics would be exhibited by the desire and ability to inspire other team members, through hard work, commitment, and sportsmanship, to give their all to the team. Campus leadership would be exhibited through meaningful participation in campus activities

Other accolades included honorable mention Scholar All-West Region and Phi Beta Kappa. In her words on what she does with the Motley: “I do a lot of things as a representative of the Motley: organize Whiteness and Privilege educational events, work with the Water Task Force to reduce water use in our business, create a safe space for survivors of sexual assault to share their stories, and hire students on campus to bake for us. I really use my position at the Motley to get involved with all the other campus issues that I'm passionate about.”
