Basketball (Stags) season recap

With a 23-5 record, the Stags tied for the second-most wins in program history. Along the way, the Stags won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) regular-season and postseason tournament championships, and were ranked as high as No. 14 nationally in the D3hoops.com rankings. CMS has now won 19 SCIAC championships and has won the postseason tournament five times. By virtue of winning the SCIAC Postseason Tournament with wins over Pomona-Pitzer (semifinals) and Cal Lutheran (finals), the Stags qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Stags defeated eighth-ranked Whitworth University 78-73 at Whitman College. The following game, CMS challenged Whitman. In the end, Whitman (at the time undefeated and Division III’s top-ranked team) prevailed on its home court 79-73. This season, the Stags were led by the performance of Michael Scarlett (CMC ’18), who earned All-Region and All-America honors this season on top of being selected as the SCIAC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Year.
