McKillop Named West Region Athlete of the Year

On Tuesday, U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) named Bryn McKillop the NCAA Division III West Regional Athlete of the year, an award given based off of a vote by member coaches in the region. McKillop took home the award after winning the West Regional Championships over the weekend with a time of 21:07.6, an 18-second improvement for her on the course.

On Tuesday morning the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced their All-American teams with three Athenas being honored. Margaux Arntson (CMC) became the first-ever First Team All-American in CMS women’s volleyball history. Mikena Werner (SC) was named to the Second Team for the second-straight season while Clara Madsen (CMC) earned an honorable mention nod.

Athenas Tame No. 1 Tigers, Advance to National Quarterfinals

At the beginning of the weekend the Georgetown Regional was touted as the toughest pod in the NCAA Tournament. After seven matches over three days, the Regional lived up to the hype. No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps edged No. 1 Colorado College in a 3-1 (21-25, 25-17, 25-17, 26-24) instant classic to claim the Regional Title and advance to the National Quarterfinals.

The No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s cross country team won their first NCAA West Regional Title since 2013 with a victory at the Regional on Saturday morning. The Athenas finished with 58 team points, 51 points ahead of the second-place Whitworth Pirates (109 points). Bryn McKillop (SC) dominated the field to claim the individual title with a time of 21:07.51. McKillop finished over 20 second ahead of second-place finisher Lauren Hamilton from Pomona-Pitzer (21:28.09).

Moving On: Athenas Get Past Pirates, Advance to Regional Final

The No. 6 Claremont- Mudd-Scripps Athenas are moving on the Georgetown Regional Final after defeating the No. 5 Southwestern Pirates 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 27-25, 25-14) on Saturday afternoon. It was an edge-of-your-seat battle the entire way through, but in the end, the Athenas prevailed and will square off with No. 1 Colorado College on Sunday with a trip to the National Quarterfinals on the line. Led by Margaux Arntson’s (CMC) 13 kills, the Athenas put together one of their more balanced attacks of the season with five different players collecting at least 10 kills. Clara Madsen (CMC), Phoebe Madsen (CMC), and Mikena Werner (SC) all tallied double-doubles in the match.

The No. 27 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s cross country team finished third in the team standings of Saturday’s NCAA West Regional. The Stags finished with a team score of 103 to trail, second-place UC Santa Cruz (90 points) by 13. Pomona-Pitzer had four of the top ten finishers to win the team title with a score of 35. Thomas D’Anieri (CMC) led the Stags with a seventh-place finish in a time of 25:31.50. Senior Kevin Huang (HMC) placed 11th to ensure his spot in next weekend’s National Championship. Both D'Anieri and Huang have, at the very least, claimed their spot as individuals in the final race of the season.

Overtime Nail Biter Favors Sagehens in Battle for Sixth Street

The 60th edition of the Sixth Street Rivalry was a thrilling one on Saturday afternoon. The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens converted a walk-off two-point attempt in overtime to win the game 29-28 over the Stags. The Stags took their first lead of the day when Chris Czielsa (CMC) hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass on just the second play of overtime. Needing a touchdown to continue the game, Pomona-Pitzer faced a fourth and seven from the 22-yard line. Karter Odermann escaped pressure and heaved a pass to the end zone. The pass bounced off the helmet of a Stag defender and into the waiting arms of Kevin Masini for the score.

The No. 14 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s swimming and diving team hosted the Whittier Poets and La Verne Leopards on Saturday morning in Axelrood Pool. The Stags handled their SCIAC foes, with a 215-72 victory over Whittier and a 231-50 win over La Verne.

The No. 16 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s swimming and diving team hosted the Whittier Poets and La Verne Leopards on Saturday morning in Axelrood Pool. The Athenas swept their SCIAC foes in dominating fashion, winning both matches by at least 100 points. The Athenas claimed the top spot in 13 of the 16 women’s events while defeating La Verne 236-49 and toping Whittier 203-96.

Having already clinched a spot in next weekend’s SCIAC Tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team doubled up the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen to end the regular season on Saturday morning. The Stags took a 5-3 lead into the half before shutting out the Kingsmen in the third period to take an 8-3 lead into the fourth before winning by the five-goal margin.

Athenas Advance to Second Round, Edge Texas-Dallas

It was back and forth all match long, but the No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s volleyball team edged the Texas-Dallas Comets 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-23) in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon. Margaux Arntson (CMC) led the Athenas’ offense with 16 kills in the match. Isabelle Taylor (CMC) was a force to be reckoned with on both offense and defense. She finished the contest with 11 kills and 11 digs for one of only two double-doubles in the match. Clara Madsen (CMC) registered the other, finishing with 29 assists and 13 digs for the Athenas.

Just a day before the No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s volleyball team takes the floor in the NCAA Regionals, four Athenas were named All-West Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Margaux Arntson (CMC) led the group with her West Regional Player of the year honors. Joining Arntson on the All-Region team were classmates, Clara Madsen (CMC) and Mikena Werner (SC). Shelbi Stein (CMC) joined the trio with an Honorable Mention nod.

On Thursday morning, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics Department officially announced Gina Oaks Garcia as the head coach for the CMS softball program. Oaks Garcia, a former All-American at Cal State Fullerton and member of U.S. and Venezuela National Teams, comes to the Athenas after assistant coaching stints at Loyola Marymount, Azusa Pacific, and Cal State Fullerton.

Stags Top Bulldogs, Claim Spot in SCIAC Tournament

In a must win game for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team on Wednesday night, the Stags turned in one of their finest performances of the season to beat the Redlands Bulldogs 11-8. Seven different Stags scored in the team effort victory. Zack Rossman (CMC) scored four goals to lead the CMS offense while Ethan Lewis (CMC) made five saves and collected three steals to help the Stags into the conference tournament.
