Women's Rugby

Youth was the order of the day as the Claremont women’s rugby team defeated archrivals Occidental College 36-10 on Feb. 18. The Foxes scored 26 points in the first 15 minutes with one try from captain Katelyn Faust (CMC ’17) and two from Michelle Ramirez (PZ ’20). The team then cruised behind the efforts of rookies Sarah Jaurez (SCR ’20), Karen Alpache (POM ’19), Grace Piette (PZ ’20) and Maya Gutierrez (CMC ’19). Finishing off the Claremont scoring was a beautiful team effort that was capped by Catherine Weiss’ (SCR ’20) lunge across the line for the try. The fate of the league will be decided next Saturday as the Foxes (4-0) travel to top of the table UC-Irvine (4-0) next Saturday (Feb 25th).

Women's Volleyball

The women’s club volleyball team played their second Regional D3 League tournament on Sunday, Feb. 20 at Pomona College’s Rains Athletic Center. The Koalas played against CSU Channel Islands (2-0), Mount Saint Mary’s University (2-0), and Cal State University Northridge (0-2). The Koalas made some great plays throughout the tournament and played an intense match against current No. 1 CSUN. Clara Chiu (SCR ’20) had several spectacular digs and Elizabeth Sun (POM ’17) averaged about 15 assists per set and went on a 10-point serving run against Channel Islands. The Koalas will be playing a crossover tournament in Rains on March 5 and will be fighting for playoff spots against UCI, CSU Fullerton, CSU San Bernardino, and CSU San Marcos.

Men's Lacrosse

The Claremont Cougars men's lacrosse club notched two Parents Weekend victories, bringing them a league-leading 76 goals for the 4-1 season.

Saturday's 21-3 game against Marymount California University saw three Claremont players score four goals each: Jack Severtson (CMC '19), Kevin Lynch (CMC '17), and Montana Rynties (CMC '20).  The game ball was awarded to Rynties in recognition of his success in his first game with the Cougars.

Sunday's 14-3 game against UC Irvine saw Logan Miller (CMC '19) rack up four goals plus three assists. The game ball went to Rob Dobie (CMC '18) for his amazing dominance of the face-offs. Goalie Jeffrey Allen (POM '17) had a .667 save percentage.

Cougar lacrosse action continues this week when Biola University travels to Claremont for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 25 on the turf at Pomona College.

Men's Rugby

On Saturday the Claremont Lions rugby team hosted Long Beach State on the Pomona turf field due to the closure of Parents Field due to weather. Thanks to Pomona College for accommodating us in this great venue. A big crowd for Parents Weekend saw the Lions come away with a fantastic 22-19 win over a Long Beach team that has won D1 the last four years. The result belied the overall Lion dominance that put them in a 19-0 lead on the backs of some phenomenal performances. The Lions failed to close the game out effectively and allowed Long Beach back in the match with some costly turnovers and a Long Beach time that wouldn't go away quietly. However, the Lions physicality proved too much for Long Beach and the Lions closed out the match on the back of Man of the Match, Brian Rauzi, and great support performances from Bobby Chui, Erik Anderson, Spencer Drazovich and Paul Slatts. Many others played significant roles in this season defining victory. The Lions now get ready to travel to Cal State Fullerton next Saturday and travel to North Carolina the weekend after for a 7's qualifier at Elon College. Go Lions.

Men's Volleyball

The men's volleyball team did not have a match this week. On Feb. 25, Claremont is traveling to San Diego to play in a crossover tournament against nationally ranked DI club teams UCLA, USC, SDSU, and University of Arizona “A”.
