Women’s Cross Country
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps cross country teams had the past week off from competition, and will next race Sept. 26 in the Cal State San Bernardino Invite and the Stanford Invite. Cross country will also compete locally in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational slated for Oct. 3.

Women’s Soccer

The Athenas split a couple of conference games this week, falling to Redlands in overtime 2-1 on the road before coming home to shut out Pomona-Pitzer 1-0. Senior Darrah Shields (CMC ’16) was the difference-maker for CMS against the Sagehens, scoring the lone goal of the contest in the 56th minute. Shields was the only Athena to find the back of the net last week, and is now second on the team in goals (2) and points (5). Looking ahead, CMS will play its third straight SCIAC match, taking on the La Verne Leopards at home Sept. 23 and will then travel to Cal Lutheran for a matchup with the Regals on Sept. 26.

Volleyball
A huge week for the CMS women’s volleyball team saw it beat nationally ranked No. 1 Emory 3-2 in the final match of the Emory National Invitational in Atlanta. Overall, the Athenas went 3-1 in the tournament, adding victories over Franklin & Marshall (Pa.) and Wheaton (Ill.), with the lone loss coming against Washington (Mo.). Sophomore outside hitter Shelbi Stein (CMC ’18) had a whopping 22 kills against Emory, the highest single- match total of her CMS career. The Athenas come home for a trio of SCIAC matches this week, visiting La Verne on Sept. 22, hosting Whittier on Sept. 25 and traveling to Cal Lutheran on Sept. 26 for a match between two nationally-ranked, top-10 teams.
