Coach Arce Memorial Service Information: A memorial service celebrating the life of William “Bill” Arce, founding CMS Athletics Director, is scheduled for Sunday, May 1 at Claremont McKenna College. The service will begin at 1 p.m. at McKenna Auditorium, followed by a reception at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum at 2:30 p.m. All are invited to join the Arce family and CMC in remembering the legacy of Bill Arce as a coach, mentor, teacher, and role model.

========== Spring – Women===========

Women’s Golf
The Athenas remained off last week as they prepare for the SCIAC Championships from April 24-26 at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont. CMS will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed.

Women’s Lacrosse
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s lacrosse team swept both of its regular season series match-ups with Chapman and Whittier, with an 11-6 win over the Panthers and a 21-9 trouncing of the Poets. Corie Hack (CMC ’19) had a combined six goals in the two victories, including four in the game against Whittier. CMS holds an 11-3 overall, 6-2 SCIAC record, good for third place in the conference but sits only a half-game behind second-place Chapman.

Softball
Solid pitching gave the CMS softball team four wins last week, three of which were shutouts. CMS swept Cal Lutheran in back-to-back, five-inning games by scores of 10-1 and 8-0, and swept Pomona-Pitzer with 5-0 and 3-0 victories. Molly Rubidoux (CMC ’16) and Anna Gurr (CMC ’18) combined for the three shutouts, and the first-place Athenas lead the SCIAC in ERA at 1.60. Now 26-6-1 overall, 19-2 in SCIAC play on the year, CMS will look to maintain its current standing this week with a home doubleheader against Whittier on April 23 and a single game at La Verne on April 24. 

Women’s Tennis
CMS earned three wins last week, bringing its record to 15-4 overall, 6-1 in SCIAC. The Athenas defeated Redlands 8-1, Occidental 7-2 and Chapman 9-0. The pairings of Caroline Ward (CMC ’16) and Katie Kuosman (CMC ’17) as well as Bria Smith (CMC ’18) and Lindsay Brown (CMC ’18) won three out of three doubles matches, while Brown and Smith also won all three of their singles contests. This week, a small group of CMS players will participate in the Ojai Tournament from April 22-24.

Women’s Track & Field
The CMS track and field teams competed in the Bryan Clay Invite on April 14-15 and an SCIAC meet on April 16. At the Bryan Clay Invite, Tyra Abraham (SCR ’18) broke her own SCIAC and CMS record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.91, and broke her CMS record in the 200-meter dash at 24.67. In addition, Vavia Palunas (SCR ’18) surpassed her previous SCIAC and CMS records in the discus with a 47.35/155-04 effort. The Athenas finished this season undefeated in SCIAC dual meets and will have a chance for a SCIAC Championship at the meet April 29-30 at Caltech.

Women’s Water Polo
The Athenas finished the 2016 regular season with a 14-10 loss to Pomona-Pitzer. Roxy Kiessling (CMC ’18) and Jessica Gaffney (CMC ’18) each scored three times against the Sagehens. CMS will head into the SCIAC Championships with a 7-17 overall, 4-4 SCIAC record and will take on Chapman in a fourth-place versus fifth-place battle on April 22 in Redlands at 7 p.m.

====================== Spring – Men========================

Baseball
The CMS baseball team was swept in its three-game series with Redlands and was outscored 29-9. Nick DeGallier (CMC ’19) pitched a solid 8.1 innings in Game One, allowing only two earned runs and five hits. The Stags fell to 8-22 overall and 6-15 in SCIAC play on the year and are currently in eighth place in the conference with one series remaining against Whittier before the SCIAC Round Robin.

Men’s Golf
After finishing second in their SCIAC #2 Tournament, the Stags had the past week off in advance of the SCIAC Championships from April 24-26 at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont. CMS will go into the SCIAC Championships with an eight-stroke lead.

Men’s Tennis
The Stags went 2-1 last week with a 7-2 win at Redlands, a 9-0 win over Occidental and a 6-1 loss at Division I UC Irvine. Skyler Butts (CMC ’16) was the only Stag to win all of his singles contests as CMS owns a 20-3 overall, 6-0 SCIAC record. This week, the Stags will have a pair of makeup matches against Azusa Pacific and Whittier on April 19 before competing in the Ojai Tournament from April 22-24.

Men’s Track & Field
The CMS track and field teams competed in the Bryan Clay Invite on April 14-15 and an SCIAC meet on April 16. At the Bryan Clay Invite, Joshua Sealand (HMC ’17) set a CMS record in the 1,500-meter run at 3:47.34 and now ranks fifth all-time in the SCIAC for the event. Michael Wagenveld (CMC ’18) set a CMS record in the SCIAC dual meet with a 5.00m/16-04.75 height in the pole vault, also good for third all-time in the SCIAC and sixth nationally. The Stags are now in a position to compete for a SCIAC Championship on April 29-30 at Caltech.

====================== Club Sports ========================

Men’s Lacrosse
The Claremont Cougars Men’s Lacrosse team ended the 2016 season with a resounding victory over the visiting Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday. The final score of 18-10 was boosted with six goals by Alexander Malmlund (CMC ’19) and six by Kaegan Ingrasci (Pitzer ’17). The game ball was awarded to Caleb Case CMC’16, the team’s sole graduating senior, in recognition of his four years of devotion to the team. The Cougars end their season with a 7-7 overall record—their best since 2012—and their first divisional win in three years.

Men’s Rugby
The Claremont Colleges won the PacWest Regional Championship over the weekend with wins over the University of Denver (48-16) in the Round of 16 and New Mexico Highlands (37-22) in the regional finals. Claremont has now advanced to the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) Champions Cup National Championships (Final Four) on April 30 and May 1 at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colo. Claremont takes on Eastern Connecticut State University in the semifinals on April 30 at 12 p.m. MST. Then on May 1, Claremont will face either the University of Southern Indiana or Mount St. Mary’s University in the championship match or third place match depending on results from April 30.
