CMS Athletics Week In Review (5/4 - 5/10/15)

===================== Spring Sports – Women ====================

Women’s Tennis
The CMS women’s tennis team competed in the first three rounds of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis National Championships last weekend. The Athenas had a bye in the first round and then went on to defeat Trinity (Texas) (5-0) and Pomona-Pitzer (5-0). With those wins, the Athenas have moved on to the quarterfinals of the championships. The Athenas were dominant in both matches as they did not give up a single point in either match.  Against Trinity, the most impressive performance for CMS came from Lindsay Brown (CMC ’18) in No. 4 singles, as she won 6-0, 6-1. Against Pomona-Pitzer, the Athenas swept doubles and clinched their sweep of the match when Katie Kuosman (CMC ’17) beat Shivani Doraiswami in No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-4. The Athenas will next play in Mason, Ohio, as they compete in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships on May 18, against Carnegie Mellon. Women’s Track & Field
Athletes from the women’s track and field team will compete in the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships on May 21-23 in Canton, N.Y. The Athenas have eight athletes with qualifying times or marks as of now. Last weekend, the Athenas used the Occidental Invite as a tune-up for nationals. One Athena came up with a personal best this weekend at the Claremont Classic on May 7-8, as Amy Hollshwandner (CMC ’17) set a PR in the heptathlon with a total score of 4,289, besting her previous high of 4,208 set in 2014.

Men’s Golf
The CMS men’s golf team was off from competition during the week but received a berth to the NCAA Division III Championships after the regular season and are now competing at the NCAAs from May 12-15 in Greensboro, N.C.  

Men’s Tennis
The CMS men’s tennis team went 2-0 in the regional portion of the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships last week, with wins over UC Santa Cruz (5-0) and Pomona-Pitzer (5-0) at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont. The most dominant performance of the weekend was by No. 6 singles player Glenn Hull (CMC ’17) against Garrett Deguchi of Santa Cruz, as he shut him out 6-0, 6-0. Against Pomona-Pitzer, CMS came out strong in doubles, where No. 1 doubles Warren Wood (CMC ’15) and Joe Dorn (CMC ’15) and No. 2 doubles Skyler Butts (CMC ’16) and Daniel Morkovine (CMC ’17) each won by a score of 8-3 in their matches. The Stags did not give up a single point in the regional to either team as they advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Championships, where they will play Johns Hopkins on May 18, in Mason Ohio. Men’s Track & Field
Athletes from the men’s track and field team will compete in the NCAA Track & Field Championships on May 21-23 in Canton, N.Y. The Stags have three athletes with qualifying marks or times for the Championships as of now. Over the weekend at the Occidental Invite, the Stags had three athletes come up with personal bests, as Michal Wagenveld (CMC ’18) had a personal best mark (4.75 meters) in the pole vault, Josh Sealand (HMC ’17) set a PR of 3:49.20 in the 1,500 meters and Garrett Ryan (CMC ’17) also set a PR in the 1,500 of 3:56.18. Cam Van (CMC ’17) won the triple jump with a mark of 14.35 meters.

Men’s Rugby (Club)
On April 18, the men’s rugby 7s team won a qualifying tournament and qualified for the National Small Colleges Rugby Organization (NSCRO) Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championships in Philadelphia, Penn. This is the first time that Claremont has participated in the event which runs from May 30-31.
