Athletics Week In Review (Extended Version - Word)
=============== Winter – Women=============
Women’s
Basketball
The
Athena basketball team won the SCIAC Tournament last week,
defeating Redlands (56-49) on Thursday and Cal Lu (60-43) on
Saturday in the championship game. In the victory over
Redlands, Kris Brackmann, (CMC ’17) recorded
her first double-double of the season with 25 points and 10
rebounds. In the championship game against Cal Lu, four
Athenas scored in double figures, led by Kim
Scamman (CMC ’15) with 14 points and nine
rebounds. The SCIAC tournament title means that the Athenas
get an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, where they will
travel to George Fox University in Oregon to play Puget Sound on
Friday at 5 p.m. PST. Watch the game and follow with live

Women’s Swimming
and Diving
Three divers from
the women’s swimming and diving team participated in the NCAA
diving qualifier in San Antonio, Texas. Maia
Presti (SCR ’17) earned a trip to the NCAA
Championships in the 1-meter dive as she finished third out of 18
divers with a score of 402.00. Mary Lynn
Clark (SCR ’17) finished 11th with a
score of 324.95 and Carli Lessard (HMC ’17)
finished 14th with a score of 315.30. Next up for the
Athenas is the Division III National Championships in Shenandoah,
Texas, from March 18-21.

Men’s
Basketball
The
men’s basketball team went 3-0 last week with a
regular-season win over La Verne (95-55) and two wins in the SCIAC
Tournament, including a semifinal victory over Cal Lu (77-51) and
an SCIAC championship win over Chapman (71-66). In Tyler
Gaffaney’s (CGU) last regular-season game, he put on
a show from behind the arc, going 9 for 9, and 12 for 14 from the
floor to tie his career-high of 35 points. In the semifinal,
Gaffaney scored a team-high 26 points. In the championship
game, Jack Grodahl (CMC ’15) scored 16
points in the second half to lift the Stags to victory. With their
SCIAC Tournament win, the Stags received an automatic bid into the
NCAA Tournament, where they will travel to Marshall, Texas, to face
Texas Lutheran on Friday at 5 p.m. CST in the first round. Check

Men’s Swimming and
Diving
Four
divers from the men’s swimming and diving team competed in
the NCAA diving qualifier last week in San Antonio, Texas.
James Stevick (CMC ’15) earned a trip to the
NCAA Division III Championships in the 1- and 3-meter dives.
Stevick won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 524.15, nearly
100 points better than the next-closest competitor. Patrick
Quarberg (CMC ’18) finished sixth with a score of
399.65, Victor Ginelli (CMC ’18) finished
seventh with a score of 346.10 and James Kabellis
(CMC ’15) finished ninth with a score of 325.35. In the
3-meter diving competition, Stevick finished second with a score of
507.30, Quarberg finished fourth with a score of 433.20 and
Kabellis came in eighth with a score of 356.50 . Next up for the
Stags is the Division III National Championships in Shenandoah,
Texas, from March 18-21.
===================== Spring Sports – Women

Women’s Water
Polo
The Athena water polo
team lost two tough matches this week at the Cal Lu Invitational,
first to Santa Clara (9-4) and then to Loyola Marymount
(7-3). Against UC Santa Clara, Rose Koper
(CMC ’15) led the team with two goals, and against Loyola
Marymount, Koper, Brittany Arneson (CMC ’17)
and Jessica Gaffney (CMC ’18) scored. The
Athenas have four games this week as they host the Claremont
Convergence Tournament, with the first game against UC San Diego at
2 p.m. Friday.
Women’s
Golf
The women’s golf
team did not compete this week but will be back in action on March
13-15 at the Collegiate Invitational in Jekyll Island,
Ga.
Softball
The Athenas split this
weekend against Cal Lu, winning the first game 3-0 and losing the
second 10-9. In the first game on Saturday, Alexa
Heydenberk (CMC ’17) went 3 for 3 with a
double. In the second game, Carly Roleder
(CMC ’18) hit a home run and had an RBI, and Tara
Robinson (CMC ’16) scored three runs and stole two
bases. The Athenas’ doubleheader against Cal State San Marcos
was rained out. The Athenas host Redlands in a doubleheader
at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday on Athena Field.
Women’s Tennis
The CMS women’s
tennis team went 2-0 last week as it defeated Academy of Art (6-3)
and UC Santa Cruz (9-0). Against Academy of Art, the Athenas’
No. 1 doubles team of Caroline Ward (CMC
’16) and Katie Kuosman (CMC
’17) won 8-5, and the No. 3 doubles team of
Lindsay Brown (CMC ’18) and Bria
Smith (CMC ’18) won 8-5. From there, the
Athenas won four of the six singles matches. In their second
match of the week, the Athenas swept UC Santa Cruz in singles and
doubles play with no singles match going to a third set.
Kyla Scott (HMC ’18) shut out her opponent
in both sets (6-0, 6-0) for an impressive victory. The
Athenas start SCIAC play this week as they take on Cal Lu at home
at noon Saturday.
Women’s Track &
Field
The CMS women’s
track and field team competed at the Rossi Relays, which featured
20 teams from Division I, II, III and NAIA and more than 600
athletes. Three CMS records were set on Saturday by the
Athenas. Vaiva Palunas (SCR ’17) broke the
22-year-old women’s discus record with a mark of 142 feet, 5
inches. Carmen Mejia (SCR ’17),
Hanna Tarleton (CMC ’17), Aiyanna
Cameron-Lewis (CMC ’18) and Sara
Mostatabi (CMC ’15) combined to break the
women’s distance medley-relay record by over 14 seconds with
a time of 11:51.20. Cameron-Lewis and Mejia teamed with
Bryn McKillop (SCR ’18) and Alex
Arnett (CMC ’16) to break the women’s 4x800
relay record by over 10 seconds with a time of 9:22.48. Event
winners for the Athenas included Erin Ristig (CMC
’15) in the pole vault with a height of 10 feet, 11.75
inches, the 4x100 relay team (Madison Knaub (CMC
’15), Tarleton, Cameron-Lewis and Tyra
Abraham (SCR ’18)) and the 4x800 relay team. The
Athenas are in action next on Saturday at Redlands in their first
SCIAC meet of the season as they face Occidental, Redlands and
Whittier.
Women’s
Lacrosse
The Athenas continued
their hot start, going 2-0 during the week with wins over Whittier
(15-7) and Pomona-Pitzer (8-7). Against Whittier, Molly
O’Donnell (CMC ’16) led the Athenas with three
goals, while against Pomona-Pitzer, Lauren Clubb
(CMC ’18) led the Athenas with three goals. Cara
Cancelmo (CMC ’17) came up big in overtime with her
only goal to win the game. The Athenas play at home next on Zinda
Field at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against Chapman.

Men’s Golf
The CMS men’s golf
team did not compete this week but will travel to Jekyll Island,
Ga., to compete March 13-15 in the Collegiate
Invitational.
Baseball
The Stags seemed to be
closing in on their first victory of the season as they lost a
couple of close games to Occidental (7-6, 12-2, 6-5). In the
solo game on Friday, which the Stags lost 7-6, Trey
Smith (CMC ’18) had a home run and three RBIs. On
Saturday, Jack Witte (CMC ’16) hit a home
run and had an RBI in the first game of the doubleheader, and
MacKenzie Menthen (CMC ’16) had two RBIs in
the second game. The Stags are now 0-15 overall, 0-9 in SCIAC play
and will host Cal Lutheran at 2:30 p.m. Friday
Men’s Tennis
The CMS men’s
tennis team went 2-0 this week as it defeated UC San Diego (7-2)
and Clark University (9-0) in a pair of matches moved to the Indian
Wells Tennis Garden due to the threat of rain. The Stags were led
by Skyler Butts (CMC ’16), who won at No. 2
doubles and then clinched the dual match win against UCSD at No. 2
singles. Warren Wood (CMC ’15) was the only
Stag to win three matches on the day, earning a victory at No. 1
doubles with partner Joe Dorn (CMC ’15)
against UCSD, and then a pair of singles wins at the top
position. Against Clark University (Mass.), three Stags
managed to not let their opponents win a game in singles as
Glenn Hull (CMC ’17), Alex
Brenner (CMC ’17) and Rohan Shankar
(HMC ’17) each won 6-0, 6-0. The Stags next play at La Jolla
Beach & Tennis Club on March 6 as they compete at the Pacific
Coast Doubles.
Men’s Track &
Field
The CMS men’s track
and field team competed at the Rossi Relays, which featured 20

The men’s distance medley-relay team of Evan
Molineux (CMC ’16), Mac Hightower
(CMC ’16), Justin Jones (HMC ’15) and
Josh Sealand (HMC ’17) set a CMS record with
a time of 10:03.10. Also finishing first for the Stags this weekend
was Alex Rich (HMC ’16) in the hammer throw
with a distance of 161 feet, 10 inches, and the 4x800 relay team of
Jones, Molineux, Hightower and Ryan Jones (HMC
’16). The Stags are in action next on Saturday at
Redlands in their first SCIAC meet of the season as they face
Occidental, Redlands and Whittier.

Men’s Rugby
The men's rugby team did not play this week. The team will play next when they host UC Riverside at Parents Field on March 7.
Women’s Rugby
The Claremont
women’s rugby team dropped a close game to UC Irvine 35-15
(and 5 tries to 3). Point scorers in the losing effort were
Naomi Brooks (PZ ’17) and Rebecca
Rosenthal (CMC ’15). The Claremont scrum was
dominant with strong performances put in by Lily
Liles (SCR ’18) and Celia Dattels
(PZ ’16). The loss puts the Foxes at 2-5-1 on the
season. Next up for the Foxes is USC on March 7 at 11 a.m. on
Parents Field.
Men’s Lacrosse
The Claremont men’s
lacrosse team took on Biola University on Sat, Feb. 28 and came
away with the 17-13 victory. The Cougars had a very balanced
scoring attack as seven different players scored.
Alex Brugger (CMC ’15) and Kevin
Lynch (CMC ’17) led the Cougars with four goals. The
Cougars travel to Brentwood to take on UCLA on Saturday at 5
p.m.
