Regional Champs! CMS Women's Cross Country wins NCAA West Title, Heads to Nationals for 12th Straight Year
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Riley Harmon finished fourth and four other Athenas finished in the 8-16 spots as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's cross country team captured the NCAA West Region Championship on Saturday morning at the Pomona-Pitzer Cross Country course.
The win gives CMS an automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III Championships next weekend, the 12th year in a row that the Athenas have earned a team qualification to nationals.
Harmon finished in 22:17.00 overall to come in fourth place behind Whitney Rich of Whitman and Lila Cardillo and Helen Guo of Pomona-Pitzer. Junior Abigail Johnson was the next Athena to cross in eighth place in a final time of 22:41.10, while junior Olivia Gleason was close behind in tenth place in 22:47.20 as the third Athena to finish.
Junior Dulcie Jones earned a 14th-place finish in 23:00.10 to put the Athenas on the cusp of the team title as the fourth finisher, and sophomore Brooklyn Button sealed it with a 23:09.00 finish to come in 16th place overall. Pomona-Pitzer didn't have its third finisher cross until 18th place, after all five Athenas had scored.
CMS also had sophomore Sophie Gitlin finish in the top 20 in 19th place to earn All-Region honors, while first-year Isabella Brusco came in 37th.
The Athenas will return to action on Saturday when they head to the NCAA Division III Championships in Louisville, Kentucky.
