CMS Goes 1-3 Against DI Foes at Bruno Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team, ranked No. 2 in Division III, was in action at the Bruno Classic on Friday and Saturday, taking on host Brown and Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday at Brown, and then facing Marist and LIU at Harvard on Saturday.

The Athenas went 1-3 on the weekend, picking up a 15-13 win over Saint Francis, and tight losses to Brown (18-14), Marist (16-11) and LIU (16-9). CMS now stands at 2-4 on the season, with all four losses (and a win) coming against Division I competition.

CMS had a 5-4 lead at the half against Brown, but fell victim to an eight-goal third quarter from the Bears and couldn't turn the momentum back in the fourth. Grace Clark led the Athenas with four goals, while Isabel Del Villar, Cooper McKenna and Valerie Wraith each had three.

CMS bounced back from that defeat to earn a 15-13 win over St. Francis, after the Red Flash held a 6-5 lead at the half. The Athenas scored six times in the third quarter to take an 11-9 lead, and then matched St. Francis with four fourth-quarter goals apiece. Mia Adsen and Clark each gad four goals, while Wraith and Caitlin Munoz each had two.

On Saturday at Harvard, the Athenas were also tied with Marist 9-9 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Red Foxes were able to pull away down the stretch. Wraith had three goals, closing out with a tying goal in the third, and finishing off the hat trick with a goal to tie it 10-10 in the fourth, while McKenna and Clark each added two.

In the LIU finale, the Athenas fell behind 7-3 at the half and couldn't mount a second half comeback. Adsen had three goals, and McKenna and Wraith added two, while goalies Mason Spencer and Natalie Stearns each played a half and each had seven saves.

CMS will be back in action at home for the first time this season next Saturday, when it will host Concordia at 9 a.m. and CSU Northridge at 3 p.m.
