CMS Women's Water Polo Falls in Tight Battle with No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer 11-8
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team fell into an early 4-0 hole against No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer and played evenly the rest of the way, but couldn't complete a comeback as it fell 11-8 on Saturday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.
Mia Adsen and Emily McElroy each had two goals for the Athenas, who fall to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer improves to 10-14 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
Adsen broke the ice for the Athenas with 1:45 left in the first quarter, as the Sagehens started on a 4-0 run and took a 4-1 lead after the opening eight minutes. Pomona-Pitzer was able to extend the lead to 7-3 at the half, depsite second-quarter goals from Maddy Menard and McElroy.
The Athenas got as close as three goals at 10-7, when Elise Power scored on a 6-on-5 with 4:46 to go. CMS matched that three-goal margin at the final buzzer, when Cooper McKenna scored to finish off the scoring at 11-8.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow, when it plays a road game at Redlands at 11 a.m., before returning home on Wednesday to face Whittier at 7 p.m.
