Undefeated in SCIAC still; Athenas beat Chapman 7-5

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In a highly anticipated match up, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team came out on top, 7-5 against Chapman University on Saturday night in front of a rowdy home crowd. Senior goalie Allison Hu had a stellar performance making repeated saves to hold the Panthers to just five goals.

Hu and her defense shut down the Panther offense in the entire first period. After the first eight minutes, CMS had the 2-0 lead with goals by sophomores Erin McCarthy and Brittany Arneson. Chapman matched CMS in scoring for the rest of the game, resulting in the two goal margin created from the first quarter of play.

Both teams scored a pair of goals in the second quarter for a 4-2 score at halftime in the Athenas' favor. Freshman Jessica Gaffney scored both goals, two of her four in the game. Gaffney struck again in the fourth quarter giving the Athenas the 6-3 and then 7-4 leads with two additional goals.

Freshman Roxy Kiessling had the seventh and final goal for CMS as the only score in the third period. Kiessling's goal created some necessary separation after Chapman's Emily Holmquist found the back of the cage to make the score 4-3.

The Athenas improve to 7-0 in SCIAC and sit at the top of the conference standings. CMS next faces Pomona-Pitzer (6-0) at home on April 15 at 7 p.m. for the final regular season game.
