Georgia McGovern Earns SCIAC Specialist of the Week Honors

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Georgia McGovern of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team was named the SCIAC Specialist of the Week for events through Sunday, Oct. 23, the league office announced today.

McGovern continued to co-quarterback the most efficient offense in the nation in a two-setter system (along with Spencer Hagenbuch), as she had 69 assists in a 3-0 week for the Athenas. She also had 12 service aces in three matches, including a career-high six in a win over Chapman, when she had three in a row in the first set to turn a 12-12 tie into a three-point lead (as well as two straight late in the third to help close it out). She also had an ace on match point in a win over Caltech.

Behind the setting of McGovern and Hagenbuch, the Athenas are now hitting .316 as a team on the year, over 40 points higher than the team that ranks second (Univ. of Northwestern at .274).

CMS will try to close out a perfect regular season this week with three more SCIAC matches, at home against Whittier tomorrow at 7 p.m., at Occidental on Friday at 7 p.m., and at home against La Verne on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Athenas are No. 1 in the nation with a 23-0 record and a 13-0 mark in SCIAC, and have a 40-match win streak in conference matches (44 including the conference tournament).

McGovern has never lost a SCIAC match, standing 31-0 against league foes, and can help CMS clinch a regular season title and the top seed in the conference tournament with a win over Whittier tomorrow.
