Top-Ranked CMS Volleyball Rolls to Quick Three-Set Win at Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team dominated from the start as it remained perfect (17-0, 7-0 SCIAC) with a 25-9, 25-16, 25-16 win over Caltech on Friday evening at Braun Gymnasium.

With the sweep, CMS remains perfect in SCIAC play, winning all 21 sets it has played so far, and extends its SCIAC win streak to 34 matches (38 including conference tournaments). Caltech slips to 5-6 overall and 2-4 in conference. 

Jenna Holmes led CMS with 15 kills and 11 digs for a double-double, hitting .407, while Brenna Bell had 12 kill sin 18 attempts, hitting .611 for the match. Audrey Sawyer had six kills in nine attempts and four blocks, Summer Ellis had six kills in 14 attempts without an error, and Dede Carranza finished with six service aces to go with 11 digs. 

The Athenas roared out to a 20-5 lead in the first set, with Carranza stringing together three service aces to help the Athenas get some early separation. Caltech was able to hang a little tougher in the second set, but CMS was able to stretch its lead out late and earn a 25-16 win. Caltech was within 12-11 in the third, but Bell had a couple of kills in a 5-0 run to give the Athenas the separation they needed to close it out. 

CMS held Caltech to just an .036 hitting percentage for the match, while hitting .358 on its offensive end. Georgia McGovern had 25 assists and Spencer Hagenbuch had 15, while Brooke McKee hit .571 in the third set with four kills in seven attempts. 

CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it hosts Pomona-Pitzer for a 4 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion.
