CMS Volleyball Moves to 13-0 With Sixth Straight SCIAC Sweep

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team won its 13th straight match to start the season as it swept Occidental on Saturday afternoon.

Set scores were 25-16, 25-11, 25-21 as the Athenas moved to 6-0 in SCIAC, all of which have been 3-0 sweeps.

CMS relied on balance to defeat the Tigers, hitting .354 as a team, but with nobody recording more than seven kills. Brenna Bell had seven kills in 12 attempts with one error, to finish with a .500 hitting percentage, while Audrey Sawyer and Jackie Jones also had seven kills, and Jenna Holmes and Melanie Williams added five apiece.

The Athenas were also effective in the serving department, tallying 13 service aces in the quick three-set win. Dede Carranza led with four aces, while Georgia McGovern, Spencer Hagenbuch and Sawyer each had two.

CMS was never seriously threatened in any of the three sets, rattling off a 10-0 scoring run in the second set with the score 13-10 to pull away for a 25-11 win. In the third set, the Athenas went ahead 24-17 before a late 4-0 run by Occidental closed the gap a little and made the final 25-21.

CMS will be back in action next week for two matches in Roberts Pavilion, hosting Chapman on Friday night and then playing a "road" game against Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at 4 p.m., which will be held at Roberts due to Pomona-Pitzer's home gymasium being under construction.
