Melanie Williams Named SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week for CMS Volleyball

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Right-side hitter Melanie Williams earned the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week Award for the second time this season, it was announced today by the league office.

Williams also was named the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 7 after earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team at the Pacific Coast Classic. Jackie Jones then won it on Sept. 13 after leading the Athenas to a 3-0 weekend at the East-West Battle at Cal Lutheran, meaning that the Athenas have captured the honor in all three weeks so far this week in which they have competed.

This week, Williams had incredible efficiency numbers, hitting .658 with 30 kills in 44 attempts and only one error. She started the week with six kills in nine attempts in a quick win over Whittier, and closed it out with 16 kills in 20 attempts against Cal Lutheran, hitting .800. In between, she added eight kills in 15 attempts at La Verne, while committing her only error of the entire week.

CMS, which is ranked second in the nation, improved to 10-0 on the year with the three wins, while starting out league play with three straight sweeps, returning back to the form which had it win three straight league titles from 2017-19 before the pandemic.

The Athenas will be back in action tomorrow night with a road match at Caltech, before returning home to face Redlands on Friday night at 7 p.m.
