Athenas Wax CalTech in SCIAC Opener

PASADENA, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team opened SCIAC play on Saturday evening with a dominating 3-0 (25-7, 25-15,25-13) sweep over CalTech. Melanie Moore (CMC) paced the offense with 11 kills in the match, while Jessica Lee (CMC) dished out 27 assist and Megan Dymerski (HMC) compiled 15 digs in the comfortable victory.

In the opening set, the Athenas had two separate runs of at least nine-straight points. CMS opened up the match with a 9-0 run with Lee serving. The early burst featured three service aces from Lee and a pair of kills from Moore. Later in the set with the Athenas hold a 14-6 lead, CMS rattled off 10-straight points with Srah Bruml (SC) serving to put the set out of reach. The Athenas would go on to take the set by a 25-7 final.

Set two was much closer throughout the first-half of the game. The Athenas held a slim 14-12 lead after a service error, but it was another big run that reestablished CMS' position in the set. The Athenas strung seven points together to take a 22-13 lead en route to taking the set 25-15. In total, CMS won 11 of the final 14 points in the set.

After dropping the first two points of the third set, CMS went on an 11-2 run to take a seven-point lead. CalTech trimmed that lead back to four-points at 15-11, but a 10-2 streak helped the Athenas run away with the third set 25-13 and complete the 3-0 sweep.

On the match, CMS swung at a .297 clip with both Melanie Moore and Hannah Grobisen (CMC) individually hitting at percentages north of .625.

The Athenas will be back on the court next Friday when they host La Verne in Roberts Pavilion. That match is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
