Laura Zimmer Earns SCIAC Track Athlete of the Week Distinction

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Laura Zimmer of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team earned SCIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors for events through Sunday, Feb. 25, the conference office announced today.

Zimmer was a part of two winning relays as CMS took first in the 4x800 and the distance medley at the annual Rossi Relays at the Burns Track Complex. She ran a 2:14 in her leg of the 4x800, which was a virtual tie for the fastest leg with teammate Natalie Bitetti, and helped the DMR team to a win by 13 seconds, breaking 12 minutes (11:59.61) for the third-fastest time in program history.

Zimmer continued her impressive senior season, which saw her make the top seven for the cross country team in the fall and compete at regionals and nationals, where the Athenas finished fourth in the country. She also broke five minutes in the indoor mile in the winter (4:57.38, which ranks 23rd nationally), and is part of an indoor DMR that ranks ninth with a program-record (indoor or outdoor) with an 11:43.04.

The Athenas have now had two Track Athlete of the Week award winners from the SCIAC, after Josephine Jett earned it last week following the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers meet, when she won the 100 meters and finished second in the 100-meter hurdles.

CMS will be back in action this weekend when it travels to compete in the first SCIAC Multi-Dual at Occidental on Saturday.
