CMS Track & Field Teams Both Earn All-Academic Team Honors

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's and men's track and field teams both earned All-Academic Team honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the organization announced today.

Both CMS teams easily passed the minimum standard required for All-Academic Team honors, which consists of a 3.1 combined cumulative GPA for student-athletes on the team. The CMS women's track and field team combined for a 3.694 GPA during the 2020-21 academic year, while the men's track and field team earned a 3.572. 

When the track and field teams last completed a full season, the Athenas and Stags both captured SCIAC Championships at home at the Burns Track Complex in the spring of 2019. The Athenas edged Redlands by three points (150-147) to earn their fifth straight league title, while the Stags bounced back from a fourth-place finish in 2018 to win the title convincingly, defeating a Pomona-Pitzer team that came in ranked No. 2 in the country. The 2020 season had just gotten underway, when spring sports were shut down in March due to COVID-19. 

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) is a non-profit professional organization representing cross country and track & field coaches of all levels. The organization represents thousands of coaching members encompassing NCAA track & field programs (DI, DII, and DIII) and includes members representing the NAIA and NJCAA, as well as a number of state high school coaches associations. The USTFCCCA serves as an advocate for cross country and track & field coaches, providing a leadership structure to assist the needs of a diverse membership, serving as a lobbyist for coaches' interests, and working as a liaison between the various stakeholders in the sports of cross country and track and field.
