Athenas Run Away with SCIAC Track and Field Championship Title

REDLANDS, Calif, - Complete domination. That is what describes the performance of the No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team at the 2018 SCIAC Track and Field Championships. The Athenas captured 208 points, 46 more than the second-place team, and a total of 10 first-place finishes en route to their fourth-straight SCIAC Track and Field Championship over the weekend. They and were led by Tyra Abraham (SC) who secured three first-place finishes. The senior won both the 100 meter dash (11.59), and the 200 meter dash (24.32), setting a new CMS record in both. She also ran the anchor leg in the 4x100 meter relay team that finished their race at the top of the podium for the second year in a row.

Day One: Friday, April 27

On the Track

Berkley became the first Athena to win the SCIAC Title in the 3000 meter steeplechase since 2015, finishing 20 seconds ahead of the field at 10:59.22. Her new personal record puts her fourth all-time in the CMS record books.

Also taking home a SCIAC Title, Stanislaw won the 10000 meter run and became the third Athena to win the title in the last three years. Her strong performance led her across the finish line in 36:58.36, over 20 seconds ahead of the next runner. She bested her personal record and moving her to fourth on the all-time list at CMS.

In the Field

Bassett continued her dominant senior campaign, securing the SCIAC Title in the discus at 41.74m (136'11"). She took home a second-place finish in the shot put, throwing the weighted ball 11.81m (38'9.0").

In the long jump, Sabrine Griffith (CMC) earned a second-place finish after leaping to a mark of 5.66m (18'7.0"), surpassing her previous personal record by almost a foot, moving her to fifth on the CMS all-time list.

Day Two: Saturday, April 28

On the Track

Abraham broke her own record, running the best 100 meter dash of her career to earn her fourth-straight SCIAC Title in the event. She ran the fastest race in Division III this season at 11.59. Abraham then went on to dominate in the 200 meter dash, winning the event with a time of 24.32, over two tenths of a second ahead of the second-place athlete. With her third-straight SCIAC Title in the event, Abraham improves on the third fastest time in Division III this year.

Breaking the record for the third consecutive race, the CMS quartet of Griffith, Grace Pratt (CMC), Nirel JonesMitchell (CMC), and Abraham took home the Athenas' second-straight SCIAC Title in the 4x100 meter relay. They dominated the field, clocking in with a time of 46.48, over a second ahead of the rest of the field.

Bryn McKillop (SC) won CMS' first 1500 meter SCIAC Title since 2009, blowing away the competition with a time of 4:27.48. She finished over seven seconds ahead of the second-place athlete from Pomona-Pitzer, running away with the top spot on the podium. She then went on to take second in the 5000 meter run, crossing the finish line in 17:40.36.

Becca Stewart (SC) brought the 400 meter dash SCIAC Title back to CMS, winning the event by a tenth of a second at 58.46, a new personal record.

CMS earned another SCIAC Title in the 800 meter run after a stellar performance from Kyleigh Mann (CMC). Her time of 2:16.79 earns CMS their fourth-straight title in the event.

Aside from her second-place performance in the long jump, Griffith found herself on the podium after finishing third in the 100 meter hurdles. She set a new personal record at 14.72, solidifying her spot at number four on the CMS all-time list.

Alongside Abraham in the 100 meter, JonesMitchell pushed herself to second in the event, and in the CMS record books with a time of 11.86. She bested her previous personal best by over four tenths of a second. In the 200 meter dash, JonesMitchell moved up to second all-time at CMS with her time of 24.74, earning a third-place finish.

The team of Pratt, Deyana Marsh (HMC), Stewart, and Abraham finished second at the meet in the 4x400 meter relay, clocking in at 4:01.01 

In the field

A week after setting a new CMS and SCIAC record with the third best mark in Division III history, Bassett won the SCIAC Title in the hammer throw by over a meter. She tossed her implement 59.99m (196'10") to reclaim the title she won in 2015 and 2016.
