CMS enters multiple meets for valuable experience

Several athletes from the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track and field programs competed in three different meets on Thursday and Friday, gaining experience from competing against top level competition. The athletes who competed were also expected to achieve high marks to qualify for the Division III Nationals and get acclimated to competing on multiple days.

Senior Jesse Joseph (HMC) competed at the Mt. SAC Relays in El Camino College on Thursday, finishing in 16^th overall in the Open 10,000 meters against Division I and II runners. His time of 30:41.45 puts him in the possible national qualifier discussion and moves him to fourth in the All-Time CMS records.

At the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University on the same day, senior Joshua Sealand (HMC) ran the 5000-meter race among a field of Div. I and post-collegiate athletes. Getting off to a fast start, Sealand saw his pace slip at the end, but still finished the best time in Div. III at 14:26.37. Sealand is currently the top-ranked runner in Div. III in the 5000 and 1500-meter and is fourth in the 800-meter. Junior Bryn McKillop (SC) also ran in the women's 5000, finishing with a life-time best 17:19.84.

The following day at the Bryan Clay Invitational, junior Tyra Abraham (SC) raced in the 100-meter dash against a talented field that featured world champion Daphne Schippers of the Netherlands, US Olympian Tianna Bartoletta and British Olympic Bronze medalist Desiree Henry. Abraham finished 19^th overall, 13^th among collegians, with a seasonal best time of 11.94. It is the best wind-legal time in Div. III. Senior Carmen Mejia (SC) took part in the 800, running 2:09.92 to finish in 19^th overall (15^th collegian).

Seniors Vaiva Palunas (SC) and Nicole Laliberte (CMC) competed at the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State University in the hammers. The two did not record near their best records as Palunas finished 26^th with a mark of 56.17 meters (184-03) while Laliberte recorded 50.50 meters (165-08).

The Stags and Athenas will regroup to compete in the third SCIAC Multi-Dual on Saturday, April 15 at Occidental College.
