Audrey Yoon Helps CMS Women's Tennis Edge Emory 5-4 to Move to 10-0 on the Year

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's team continued its lengthy winning streak by defending its home court on Sunday, defeating No. 7 Emory in a close 5-4 battle at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

Audrey Yoon provided the clinching point when she came back from down 6-5 in the second set to win a tiebreaker 7-1 at No. 2 singles for the win (6-3, 7-6) and break a 4-4 tie in the match.

With the win, CMS moves to 10-0 on the year, extending its winning streak to 33 matches dating back to last year. The Athenas also continued their strong play after taking the title at the ITA Indoor Championship last week with wins over No. 10 Carnegie Mellon, No. 8 Johns Hopkins and No. 2 Chicago. The Athenas also swept No. 14 Sewanee and No. 18 Kenyon on Friday at Biszantz and meets No. 17 WashU at home tomorrow.

The Athenas built a crucial 3-0 lead in doubles, with Yoon and Katherine Wurster earning an 8-1 win at No. 3, and Lindsay Eisenman and Ella Brissett quickly following with an 8-3 win at No. 2. Alisha Chulani and Nikolina Batoshvili were up 7-4 at No. 1, and held off an Emory comeback for an 8-6 win to give CMS a 3-0 lead heading into singles.

Emory came back to tie with the first three singles points as Yanire Marte took a win at No. 6, Iris Berman won at No. 5 and Izzy Antanavicius earned a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 4. Chulani broke the run with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 to put the Athenas back in front, but Emory Kantrovitz came back for a three-set win at No. 1 for the Eagles, setting up a battle between Yoon and Ana Cristina Perez for the match.

Perez came close to pushing the decisive match to a third set, but Yoon was able to come through in the clutch in the second-set tiebreaker for the Athenas, winning seven of the eight points to avoid the split.

CMS will look to cap off a busy spring break weekend with another win when it takes on WashU tomorrow for a 10 a.m. contest.
