CMS Women's Tennis Picks Up Pair of Shutout Wins
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's team got a late start and played through a lengthy weather delay, but was able to pick up a pair of shutout wins on Saturday at the Claremont Club, defeating Swarthmore 7-0 and Christopher Newport 4-0.
With the wins, CMS moves to 6-1 on the year, while handing Swarthmore (5-1) its first loss. Christopher Newport falls to 1-8 with its defeat.
With the start of the match delayed by over two hours due to overnight rain, the teams played with a DI scoring format with doubles matches going to six games (and just one doubles point instead of three). Athenas earned the point quickly, as Lindsay Eisenman and Audrey Yoon won 6-1 at No. 3, and Alisha Chulani/Nikolina Batoshvili and Sena Selby/Katherine Wurster each winning 6-2 at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
After a rainstorm forced a lengthy delay, CMS was able to control singles and get the clinch rapidly, as Wurster earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, Yoon won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, and Selby won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5. Ella Brissett also won a dominant 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 3 and Arushi Malik won in straight sets at No. 6. Batoshvili had to work for her point, but finished off the shutout with a 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 win at No. 4.
CMS then played Christopher Newport in the second half of the doubleheader, with the match only going until completion. Batoshvili and Chulani won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, as did Yoon and Brissett at No. 2, with Eisenman and Wurster making it a sweep with a 6-3 win at No. 3.
Wurster had her second straight dominant win in singles at No. 2, winning 6-1, 6-0, while Brissett won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 and Eisenman earned a 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4. Selby was on the verge of a clinch at No. 4, leading 6-1, 5-2, while Malik was close to her second singles win with a 6-2, 4-1 lead at No. 6. Chulani was up a set at No. 1 as well, leading 6-1, 3-5.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Amherst for a 10 a.m. contest at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
