CMS Women's Tennis Advances Seven Into ITA Singles Quarterfinals, Four Teams into Doubles Quarters

CLAREMONT, Calif. - A year ago, the CMS women's tennis team didn't have a player reach the singles finals at the ITA West Regionals, and that is already guaranteed to not happen this year, as seven of the eight players who advanced to this year's quarterfinals are all from the Athenas.

Things ended just fine for CMS last year of course, as they finished the season with a national championship trophy after a slow start. This year, the Athenas look the part of a team ready to repeat.

The biggest win for the Athenas in singles in terms of drama was Audrey Yoon, who took a 10-8 tiebreaker in the third set against Yoyo Benchetrit of Caltech, and will be the only one to not face her own teammate in tomorrow's quarterfinals, as she will match up with top seeded Angie Zhou of Pomona-Pitzer.

Last year, Zhou played Nina Ye in the singles finals, but Alisha Chulani upset the second-seeded Ye this time around to prevent history from repeating itself, earning a 6-2, 7-5 win in the Round of 16. She will face first-year Katherine Wurster, who picked up 6-3, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1 wins to breeze into the quarterfinals.

The other Athena vs. Athena matchups tomorrow will feature Devon Wolfe vs. Lindsay Eisenman and Sena Selby vs. Ella Brissett. Eisenman already took one CMS vs. CMS win when she defeated Arushi Malik in the second round 6-3, 6-3 after Malik won her opening round 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) over Andei Fukushige of Occidental.

Wolfe (6-4, 6-1 / 6-2, 6-3), Selby (6-2, 6-0 / 6-1, 6-3) and Brissett (6-2, 6-3 / 6-0, 6-1) all cruised through to the quarterfinals.

In doubles, CMS will have a pair in all four quarterfinal matches as well. Chulani and Wolfe had a close 8-7 (8-6) win over Alexandra Coleman and Patria Aziz to make it through to the quarters, while Wurster and Selby took down the No. 3 seed from Pomona-Pitzer 8-2. Eisenman and Gabby Lee cruised to 8-0 and 8-2 wins, while Brissett and Yoon advanced with 8-6 and 8-5 victories.

Doubles will get things started tomorrow at 8:30 a.m., as the Athenas will try to build off their day one success and advance through to the finals on Sunday.
