CMS Women's Tennis Wins First Duals of 2021-22 Season



CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team defeated Point Loma 6-1 and Hope International 7-0 on Friday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, taking wins in its first two duals since the 2020 season.

The Athenas opened the day by earning the doubles point against Point Loma, as Sarah Bahsoun and Sena Selby earned a 6-1 win at No. 1, and Gabby Lee and Sydney Lee captured a 6-2 win at No. 2. 

In singles, Sydney Lee had a strong effort at No. 2 to put CMS ahead 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Devon Wolfe rolled to a quick 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 to get CMS its third point, and Ella Brissett picked up the clincher at No. 6 by rallying from behind in the second set for a 6-1, 7-5 victory and a 4-1 lead. 

Crystal Juan added a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles to give the Athenas a fifth point, and Audrey Yoon had a comeback win at No. 2 to cap off the match, winning 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) to complete the 6-1 win. 

The Athenas then came back in the evening to shut out Hope International and make it a 2-0 start to the spring season. Yoon and Juan had a 6-0 shutout win at No. 1 doubles, while Wolfe and Brissett added a win at No. 2 and Selby and Arushi Malik earned a victory at No. 3. 

CMS dominated singles as Gabby Lee won at No. 1, Bahsoun at No. 2, Selby at No. 3, Juan at No. 4, Chulani at No. 5 and Malik at No. 6. Malik won 6-0, 6-0 in her match at No. 6, while Selby and Bashoun almost matched, earning 6-1, 6-0 wins. 

The Athenas will be back in action a week from Sunday for another doubleheader, when it takes on Trinity (Texas) and Mary Washington in their first action against Division III opponents this season.
