After Emory Clincher, Catherine Allen Takes SCIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week Award
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Catherine Allen captured the SCIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week Award for events through Sunday, March 1, the league office announced today.
Allen earned the honor after a big weekend to lead the Athenas to first place at the ITA Indoor Championships in Nicholasville, Ky., winning all three of her singles and doubles matches over the three days.
After cruising to a pair of 9-0 wins in the quarterfinals over host Center, and the semifinals over No. 7 Carnegie Mellon, CMS came down to the wire with Emory for the indoor championship. The Eagles had won each of the last three ITA Indoor Championships, and the last five they participated in, after also winning in 2010 and 2011 before returning to the tournament in 2017.
Allen ended up the last one playing with the match deadlocked at 4-4, and her opponent serving for the match leading 5-4 in the third. Allen responded with a key break to get back on serve, and then won the final two games to take a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 win that gave the Athenas the indoor title.
CMS will be back in action for three matches at home this weekend, taking on Cal Lutheran on Friday at 3 p.m., and then facing Army West Point on Sunday at 10 a.m., followed by Swarthmore at 2 p.m.
