CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis and women's tennis teams will serve as hosts the ITA West Regionals this weekend in Claremont, beginning on Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. with men's doubles and continuing through to the doubles championships on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The annual three-day event will see action at both CMS' Biszantz Family Tennis Center and Pomona-Pitzer's Pauley Courts. The top two finishers in each event will earn invitations to the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia on Oct. 17-20, an expanded format this year as previously only the regional champions earned invitations to the ITA Nationals.
A year ago, the Athenas saw senior Catherine Allen and junior Caroline Cox earn the ITA West Regional championship before going on to win the ITA Cup in three sets over Carnegie Mellon. Cox and Allen would add the NCAA Division III Doubles Championships in the spring as well, when they defeated teammates Sarah Bahsoun and Nicole Tan in the finals. Cox is studying abroad this fall, which will prevent the duo from defending their title. The Stags, meanwhile, had Jack Katzman finish as the runner-up in both singles and doubles, along with graduated senior Julian Gordy. Current senior Nikolai Parodi, who played No. 1 singles and doubles for the Stags last year, missed the ITA fall competition while studying abroad.
Both CMS tennis teams finished as the national runner-up a year ago, with the Stags reaching the national championship match before falling to Emory, and the Athenas coming up just short in their bid for back-to-back national championships, falling to Wesleyan (Conn.) 5-4. CMS won the 2018 NCAA Division III Championship (5-4 over Emory) at Biszantz, while the Stags captured the national championship in 2015.
Draws and tournament brackets will be announced on Wednesday. To view draws and to follow tournament results all weekend, head to the tournament home page on USTA's Tennis Link.
