Caroline Cox Becomes Fourth Athena to Win SCIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Caroline Cox, who had the clinching win in singles against a pair of top 10 teams, was named the SCIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week for matches through Sunday, March 30, the league office announced today.

Cox becomes the fourth different member of the No. 2 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team to win the award this season. Sophomore Rebecca Berger won it after the opening weekend for the Athenas, junior Catherine Allen captured it in early March after the ITA Indoor Nationals, and freshman Sarah Bahsoun earned the award last week.

This week, Cox brought home the award for her role in helping CMS defeat No. 9 Chicago and No. 5 Middlebury on consecutive days. She and Allen won both doubles matches, improving to 20-1 this season (with the only loss to Division II UC San Diego) including the ITA Cup national championship in the fall. They were tested against Chicago, falling in an early 4-0 hole, but rallied back to win in a tiebreaker 8-7 to remain undefeated against Division III competition and swing the momentum of the match. They then dominated their match against Middlebury on Saturday, winning 8-2.

In singles, Cox had a case of deja vu as she won by the identical score of 6-0, 6-4 on both days, while also providing the fifth and clinching team point in each of the two matches. She improved to 12-3 in singles this season, giving her a combined 32-4 record in both singles and doubles.

CMS will be back in action when it returns to SCIAC play with a pair of home matches this weekend, taking on Chapman on Friday at 2 p.m. and Whittier on Saturday at 3 p.m.
